About this course

Rock guitar offers players more dialects, techniques and colors to draw on than any other style of guitar, bar none. Today's rock player needs tasty chops, a more sophisticated sense of rhythm and harmony, a bagful of rock techniques, improvisational skills and other essential tricks of the trade. And that's where Rock Solid comes into play -- this collection of rock video guitar lessons will seriously and quickly overhaul every aspect of your playing.

Jeff Scheetz is one of the few top notch performing and studio artists who can also expertly communicate the what, why and how of modern rock guitar. Scheetz exploded on the scene a few years back as the "Hot Pick" of all the major guitar pubs. He now tours the Jeff Scheetz band, has several CDs to his credit, authored countless educational articles and conducts clinics around the world.

Rock Solid is a hands-on playing course, which guides the student through ten distinct rock rhythm patterns and variations, ten distinct solos and variations, essential right and left-hand techniques, rock guitar tricks and a very effective harmonic system for coloring your solos and improvisational work. No tedious theory or exercises, no long monologues -- you will rock your way through the course. Here's how Rock Solid is presented …
Ten rock instrumentals are broken up into four rhythm video lessons and four video solo lessons.
The rhythm guitar lessons demonstrate the parts, then presents variations, extra licks and voicings.
The solo guitar lessons demonstrate the solos, then breaks them down note-by-note, with several variations.
Each pair of guitar lessons (rhythm and solo) feature a corresponding backing track to practice over.
Text descriptions provide overviews of the tune along with background on the style or technique.
Interactive Power Tab is included so you can see, hear and slow down tablature and notation.

Funk-O-Rama - Rhythm
Funky rhythms are the kind of stuff to get you groovin'. Going back to the early James Brown stuff or to all the Motown material that had the killer grooves, one thing you really notice is that when it comes to funk, many times less is more. This groove is funky and uses some slides and partial chords to keep it sparse. As always, keep your right hand going in the up and down motion to keep your groove in place.

Funk-O-Rama - Rhythm
So when we have a funky rhythm with a lot of right hand motion, we kind of have to focus on what the left hand is doing and how to vary it to stay in the groove of the right hand. Little hammer-ons and slides usually do the trick. Remember, once you get used to keeping that right hand going in a steady motion, that really opens you up to be able to do lots of things with your left hand. A steady right hand rhythm is a forgiving thing for your left hand!

Funk-O-Rama - Solo
This solo has some chromatic lines, some wider interval skips, some one string sliding, and of course a bit of blues phrasing thrown in for good measure. I used a little bit cleaner sound for the solo on this one. You don't want it to be too overdriven, but at the same time you want it to still rock, because in spite of the fact that the rhythm is clean the solo should still sing a bit. Play around with your effects a bit until you achieve a sound that feels comfortable and lends itself well to the music at the same time.

We are using our flat 5 note again on this one. We play the blues scale (minor pentatonic with b5) but also add the b5 note to our dorian scale. This creates an interesting line that goes right along with our rhythm part which also has a dorian flavor to it with the b3, natural 6 and b7. So adding the b5 to that really makes it interesting. The interval stuff gives you a nice Robben Ford or Jimmy Herring feel.

Jeff Scheetz is one of the best guitar teachers on TrueFire

This course is great. It's old though, so bear that in mind. It's a well structured course, but not as beginner friendly as others such as Hard Rock Rhythm Survival Guide by Angus Clarke, which is a great rock course for late beginner and intermediate level players or for anyone wanting to tighten up and become more refined with their rhythm rock guitar skills. Anyways, this course is also great and is packed with content, but to get the most from it you'll want to be sure to watch Jeff Scheetz breakdown of each song and take it one or two songs at a time at most. Once you get them down enough, then move on to other material. This course works best when taking it with another course such as the previously mentioned Hard Rock Rhythm one. Good luck with your playing people!
