About this course

Learning how to play chord melody arrangements might appear to be a long and complicated process of memorizing hundreds of voicings and an encyclopedia's worth of jazz theory, but it’s actually much easier than it looks IF you break it down into a series of logical, simple steps.

That’s exactly what you’ll do here in Frank Vignola’s Jazz Chord Melody Playbook. Better yet, you’ll play your way through the course -- no tedious theory or boring exercises to struggle through.

”We’ll work my jazz chord melody system through 5 chord melody arrangements. Each featuring 3 levels of each arrangement, from very basic to advanced — just like I would play it myself on the bandstand!

This is exactly the approach I use myself getting a chord melody arrangement up to speed. This same system has been used by hundreds, if not thousands of my students very successfully. I’m very confident it will work for you as well!”

Each of the five chord melody arrangements features 9 video lessons: Overview & Harmonic Analysis, Chords Practice Session, Melody Practice Session, Basic Chord Melody Arrangement, Basic Analysis & Breakdown, Embellished Chord Melody Arrangement, Embellished Analysis & Breakdown, Advanced Chord Melody Arrangement, and Advanced Analysis & Breakdown.

Frank will explain and demonstrate all of the key concepts and approaches along the way. You’ll get standard notation and tabs for all of the key examples and performance studies. Plus, you’ll be able to use TrueFire’s learning tools to sync the tab and notation to the video lesson. You can also loop or slow down the videos so that you can work with the lessons at your own pace.

Grab your guitar and let’s play jazz chord melodies with Frank Vignola!

The Chord Melody Playbook
Hello, I'm Frank Vignola. Welcome to the Jazz Chord Melody Playbook!

Learning how to play chord melody arrangements might appear to be a long and complicated process of memorizing hundreds of voicings and an encyclopedia worth of jazz theory, but it's actually much easier than it looks IF you break it down into a series of logical, simple steps.

That's exactly what we'll do here in this Jazz Chord Melody Playbook and you'll play your way through the course - no tedious theory or boring exercise to struggle through.

We'll work my system through 5 chord melody arrangements, each featuring 3 levels of each arrangement, from very basic to advanced just like I would play it on the bandstand. The first step of my system is learning the basic chord changes of the tune. Then we'll learn the melody.

In the Level 1 arrangement, you'll learn how to play the melody along with the prevailing root bass note, or simple prevailing triad. The Level 2 arrangement, we'll play the melody along with chords and extensions. Then in the Level 3 arrangement, we'll play the arrangement as if I were performing it on the bandstand adding fills, groove, tempo and more sophisticated chord voicings. This is exactly the approach I use myself getting a chord melody arrangement up to speed, and this same system has been used by hundreds, if not thousands of my students very successfully. I'm very confident it will work for you as well.

Everything is tabbed and notated and you'll be able to sync the tab and notation to the video using TrueFire's learning tools. You can also loop or slow down any of the videos so you can work with the lessons at your own pace.

Hard but totally worth it

By far this is the hardest course I've taken in the Jazz Learning Path so far. Also, it's the course which taught me the most. If you take the time to digest and visualize all the voicings presented in these arrangements you'll definitively lear a lot.

Frank Vignola Chord Melody Playbook Review

Really well thought out way to develop chord melody playing and nice to have a "leveling up" approach to it. Lots of books / instrucrional materials just throw you in the deep end of impossible chord shapes and really difficult arrangements (p. s. if we're already Joe Pass we don't need to buy a book, right?).
