Trading Solos: Folk Jazz

About this course

In Adam Levy's Folk Jazz edition of Trading Solos, you’ll trade solos with Adam over five frequently encountered folk-jazz grooves, in a variety of keys and feels including a half-time shuffle in Db, a 12-bar progression in 6/8 in the key of A, a laid-back 4/4 feel in the key of A major, an upbeat country groove in the key of E major, and a mid-tempo ballad in the key of E.

"Folk jazz melds jazz influences with other elemental American styles — spanning blues, R&B, singer-songwriter, country, and folk. Trading solos with other players and comping for each other is a great way to expand your vocabulary and keep growing as a musician."

For each of the five folk-jazz jam tracks, Adam will show you a handful of licks and rhythm approaches that you can use over the tracks as you trade solos with Adam. Then, you'll take turns applying those ideas, trading solos and comping for each other.

Adam will explain and demonstrate all of the key concepts and approaches along the way. You’ll get standard notation and tabs for all of the key examples and performances. Plus, you’ll be able to use TrueFire’s learning tools to sync the tab and notation to the video and can also loop or slow down the videos so that you can work with the lessons at your own pace. All the backing tracks are included to work with on your own as well.

Trading Solos: Folk Jazz
Hi, I'm Adam Levy. Welcome to Trading Solos: Folk Jazz!

Folk jazz melds jazz influences with other elemental American styles — spanning blues, R&B, singer-songwriter, country, and folk. Trading solos with other players and comping for each other is a great way to expand your vocabulary and keep growing as a musician.

In this course, we'll jam together over five folk jazz grooves in a variety of keys and feels. For each of the five tracks, I'll show you a handful of comping and soloing approaches you can use right away and then continue to develop in your own voice. Everything is tabbed and notated and you'll be able to sync the tab and notation to the video using TrueFire's learning tools. I also include the backing tracks and you'll be able to loop or slow down the videos so that you work with the lessons at your own pace.
Folk Jazz Sonic Approaches
For playing folk jazz, the signal chain can be kept pretty simple. Generally, the more organic the tone, the better. I've got just six stomp boxes (plus a power supply) on my board. In sequential order: tuner, compressor, booster/EQ, overdrive, tremolo, and delay.
Track 1: Night Music
"Night Music" is a half-time shuffle in Db and is a nod to the music of guitarist Julian Lage. Most of the chords are native to the key and they change in predictable places. This simplicity gives us a lot of room to play creatively in our rhythm and in our solos.
Track 1: Night Music
Here I demonstrate three rhythm-guitar ideas for "Night Music". The first idea uses chordal pads with a common tone on top. The second utilizes rolling arpeggios within a limited range. The third is what I call a "jazz reggae" feel. It's not truly authentic to reggae, but it does bring a breezy swagger to this groove.
Track 1: Night Music
Here I demonstrate three soloing ideas for "Night Music". The first utilizes parallel sixths for sweet harmonies (this approach is particularly effective in a trio setting, when there's no one playing chords behind the guitar solo). The second idea emphasizes the 3rd of each chord — a "vertical" approach. The third idea is, essentially: play the blues! This is a "horizontal" approach.
Track 1: Night Music
In this Playalong Preview, you'll see how these rhythm and soloing ideas fit together.

Trading solos with Adam levy

This course is teaching me how to approach folk jazz style music ala Bill Frisell . Thoroughly enjoyed the first track Night Music and looking forward in completing the rest of the course.

Jazzy folks

Another course that is as calming as it is informative. Jazz and folk probably don’t get out together often but in this course they compliment each other really well. Both coming from roots music really, these different concepts really let players take their time and explore these sounds on the guitar - without just putting fingers to frets and Hoping for the best. Always approachable and clear with his lesson material, Adam has crafted another course which is great for both those earlier in their playing careers and those further along. Slower tempos are always a great way to use your ears and feel the vibe to really try to play what you are hearing and feeling instead of just plugging in the same old stuff.

slow hand

I like these lessons as they helped constructing musicality around slow tempo. If you are not confortable with faster tempo, I suggest trying this one.
