Tapping A To Z

About this course

TrueFire Foundry courses are independently produced courses presented by a hand-picked selection of top-notch artists and educators from around the world. Filmed in the educator’s own studio, Foundry courses bring fresh educational concepts and very effective teaching methodologies to TrueFire Students. Scott Allen’s Foundry course, Tapping A to Z will teach you two-handed tapping techniques for the modern rock guitarist.

Hello I'm Scott Allen — welcome to my TrueFire Foundry course, Tapping A to Z, which I produced in my own studio.

This course is for intermediate to advanced players who would like to learn more about essential techniques involved in two handed tapping. We will start you off at the ground floor and teach the quintessential techniques used by tapping innovators such as Eddie Van Halen, George Lynch and Randy Rhoads. Starting with applying tapping to the familiar Pentatonic scale we will get the ball rolling with tapping on one string and then moving to cross string tapping. Next we will add some flavor to our taps with adding slides, double taps and other fun color techniques.

Next we will apply tapping to the Diatonic scale to get more sophisticated sounds like those used by Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Vito Bratta and Reb Beach. We will start by tapping with one scale pattern at a time and then graduate to cross pattern Diatonic tapping. This is the smoothest and most saxophone like sound you can get with a guitar.

Now that we are comfortable with tapping in general we will then take it up a notch by getting into basic eight finger tapping using Pentatonic scales. This is a style forged by the great Jennifer Batten who along with Steve Lynch was one of the earlier innovators of eight finger rock guitar.

Once comfortable with Pentatonics we will get into Chris Broderick territory with Diatonic eight finger tapping using a variety of sequences. This will culminate in harmony tapping where you will be able to harmonize with yourself by playing harmonized lines with both hands. Anyone who has ever heard Michael Angelo Batio has heard this concept but he needs two guitar necks to do it whereas we need only one!

Lastly, no discussion of two handed guitar would be complete without discussing harmonics. Starting with Eddie Van Halen style tapped harmonics we will apply them to arpeggiated chords, whole chords, and finally single note lines. We will also get into jazzy "harp" harmonics like those used by Steve Morse, Eric Johnson and Steve Lukather. These will give you the ability to make your guitar sound like a harp! And as a bonus you don't need a cranked up Marshall to do them properly.

This course will take you from the first baby steps of tapping to some of the most sophisticated two handed techniques used in modern rock guitar.

NOTE! Scott Allen organized the course into 8 weekly sections for those students that prefer to have a specified regimen of material across a specified time schedule. However, for those students who prefer to work at their own pace, or even skip around you are certainly encouraged to approach the course in that way as well.

Tapping A to Z
Welcome to Tapping A to Z! In this course, we will cover all of the bases you need to know about two handed rock guitar. First, we'll get into some standard pentatonic tapping á la Eddie Van Halen and Randy Rhoads on both one string and cross strings. Next, we will add some flavor with some cheap tapping tricks. After that, we'll up the difficulty by applying tapping to diatonic scales similar to how Vai and Satriani use the technique. We will then further extend this concept by traveling across the fretboard with some Reb Beach inspired tapping. At that point, we'll get into eight finger tapping with both pentatonic and diatonic scales. We'll learn how to do harmonies with ourselves using tapping, and then finish up with two handed harmonics. Whether you have been tapping all your life or have never done the concept before, this course has something for you. Picks? Who needs 'em!
Week 1: Basic Two Handed Tapping
This lesson will cover the basics of two handed tapping technique starting on one string and then moving to cross string applications. Take particular note of the suggestions on what to do with the pick while tapping as well as the proper muting technique.
Week 2: Cheap Thrills
Next we'll add some flavor to the basic concepts we have already learned. These are simple ideas favored by players lick Eddie Van Halen, Steve Vai, George Lynch, and Reb Beach to add some color. Have fun!
Week 3: Diatonic Tapping
Here we will take the concept we have already learned from the pentatonic scale and apply it to the diatonic scale. Conceptually, it is very much the same, except we are dealing with a three note per string scale pattern and we will be plucking with the ring finger on the tapping hand as we ascend. This will take some getting used to, but I promise it is the best way to ascend through these diatonic scales when tapping.
Week 4: Cross Pattern Diatonic Tapping
Here we'll take the concept of diatonic tapping up a notch by tapping across patterns as we ascend. You'll start on the top string and move up one diatonic pattern in the key as you ascend through the strings. This will give you four notes per string and will allow you to play blindingly fast across the neck. Take your time and focus on precisely playing each scale as you ascend.
Week 5: Eight-Finger Tapping
This week we'll get into some basic eight finger tapping techniques. We'll start with the pentatonic scale, because it's a scale we already know well and the fact that it is easy to use for this application. We will take the pentatonic scale and mirror it up a fourth for a major key and up a fifth for a minor key. You will learn several sequences to develop this but the formula will always stay the same, up a fourth for major and up a fifth for minor. Good luck!
Week 6: Diatonic Eight-Finger Tapping
For this lesson, we will apply eight finger tapping to the diatonic scale. This will take a good deal of visualization and finger independence to do this effectively. We will use variations: First we'll simply hammer tap and pull, and secondly we'll apply a sequence. This should be applied to any diatonic scale in any key.

Interesting

Scott Allen is a good teacher and the material he covers in this course is nothing short of brilliant. My only real complaint, and the reason for a 3-star rating, is that the sound quality is not up to the same standards kept to in all other courses taught here on TrueFire. The mic picks up all the sounds of the guitar in its original state (picking, clacking, etc.) and it overpowers the amplified sound. Hopefully they can redo this course with better sound quality.
