Smart Practice For Guitar

About this course

“Practice, practice, practice.” Anyone learning to play an instrument has heard that sage advice a hundred times. Yet, more often than not it seems that no matter how hard or how long we practice, we just don’t seem to move the dial. What’s up with that?!

The answer is really very simple. It’s not just how long you practice. Or how hard you practice. Or even what you practice. It’s how you practice. Vince Lombardi said it best, ”Practice does not make perfect. Only perfect practice makes perfect.” TrueFire’s Director of Education, Jeff Scheetz calls it Smart Practice and he’s designed a step-by-step practice system just for guitarists.

"I’m excited to share my Smart Practice for Guitar system along with many of the practicing techniques that I’ve developed and tested over the years. I’ve not only used these to improve my own playing, I’ve also helped thousands of students get great results with these methods and move their playing to the next level."

Jeff organized Smart Practice for Guitar into several sections. In the first section, Jeff overviews the system and lays a foundation for you to build upon so that you’ll be able to get the biggest payoff for the time you invest in your practice sessions.

The second section, The System, is the core of Smart Practice and this is where you’ll define your musical goals, create what Jeff calls “Skillbox Inventory Lists” and schedule your practice time into “Smart Zones.” Jeff also shows you how to use the “5 Smart Steps” when you’re ready to really drill down. The included Smart Practice for Guitar worksheets play an important role in helping you craft your personalized Smart Practice system.

In the Smart Practice Techniques section you’ll be introduced to a wide range of useful and extremely effective practicing techniques designed to spice up your practice time. In the Methods and Concepts section, Jeff presents a series of practical tips to consider whenever you’re practicing.
"I highly recommend this course if you feel like you are putting in too much practice time and seeing too few results. And if you have been slacking, this is a great motivational tool that won't take you that long at all to absorb and implement into your daily routine." - Orrin Cummins, TrueFire Student
You won’t find any licks or riffs in the Smart Practice for Guitar system — you already have plenty of that material. Smart Practice shows you how to organize your material into your practice sessions. You’ll learn how to quickly and easily identify what you need to work on next to move your playing forward.

Jeff equips you with a variety of practice techniques and approaches to maximize your practice time and yield optimal results. No more distractions, no more wasted time. The Smart Practice for Guitar system is modular so you can implement the entire system in your practice sessions, or cherry-pick the sections, worksheets or techniques that appeal to you most.

George Eliot said “It’s never too late to be what you might have been.” Practice smart, play hard!

Smart Practice For Guitar
Thanks for picking up Smart Practice for Guitar! I am excited to share my Smart Practice System along with many of the practicing techniques that I have developed and tested over the years. I have not only used these on my own playing, but have also helped thousands of students get great results with these methods.

Let me explain how the system is laid out and give you some pointers on how to get the most out of it. The material is divided into several sections; the main ones are The System, Smart Practice Techniques, and Methods and Concepts.

“The System” section is the core of Smart Practice and you will start by setting up goals for your guitar playing. Then you will create what I call the “Skillbox Inventory Lists” and schedule your time into “Smart Zones.” When you sit down to work on your material use the “5 Smart Steps” to really drill down. There are Worksheets in these sections as well as in the master Workbook that play an important role in helping you craft your practice system. So make sure you take the time to fill out the Worksheets to get the most out of the System.

The next section is “Smart Practice Techniques” and here you will find a bunch of useful practicing techniques that will spice up your practice time. Just drilling on something over and over is not only boring, but science now tells us it doesn't work nearly as well as mixing things up! So here is where you can do some mixing. Some of these techniques might seem a little wacky, but have some fun with them and get creative!

In the “Methods and Concepts” section I go over practical tips to consider when you are practicing. Many of these will hopefully spark your thinking about how you have been practicing and what you can do to make it better.

Of course any system of practice only works when you apply it, and I certainly think it will benefit you the most if you do every single thing in the Smart Practice System! However, one cool thing about this system is that it is modular. If you just need to figure out your schedule, you can use that section. Or if you want to get some new ways to work on stuff, you can pull from the techniques section. There is no doubt in my mind that practicing more effectively and efficiently will help you take your guitar playing to the next level.

Now jump in and get started – make this the year you will really get better as a player. As George Eliot said “It’s never too late to be what you might have been.”

Practice Smarter, and Get Better!

SECTION 1: Foundation
I believe it is not that we don't know we “need” to practice, it’s that most of us have never been taught “how” to practice. Having a system helps keep us on the right track.
What is Practice?
K. Anders Ericsson is a leading researcher in field of expertise and he tells us that practice “requires effort and is not inherently enjoyable”.

Man - that doesn't sound very exciting! HA! But I believe if we get ourselves organized and stick with a practice plan it can help keep us from getting too bored.
The Three P's
I see a lot of students who get stuck in "play" time on the guitar. That is understandable because we like to have fun when we grab the guitar, but that can really derail any real improvement due to just "playing around" instead of practicing things that will help you advance.
SECTION 2: The System
I think any good practice system should include these things:

1) A way to set and organize your goals or vision for what you want to accomplish
2) A system to assess where you are and what you need to do next
3) A reliable method to schedule your practice time in a way that helps you get the most out of your time
4) A system to help you actually work on the material once you set down to practice
5) Tips and techniques to help keep practice interesting and fun

Throughout the following sections I'll help you develop your own practice system.
Goals and Vision
Knowing where you are going seems like a simple concept, but I am always surprised at how many guitar students would not be able to answer when I asked them what they ultimately wanted to accomplish on guitar.

This section will help you organize your goals and start to look at what the next steps are.
Skillbox Inventory Lists
This step is so important in the Smart Practice system. You have to get an organized snapshot of where you are, what you are working on, and what you need to do next.

This Skillbox Inventory List exercise will help you see exactly where you are and how to get to the next level.

I was meandering and not really accomplishing anything with my practice. This course helped me understand what my practice was missing and how to finally make progress.
