About this course
TrueFire’s Live Plus series enhances the learning experience of select and previously recorded TrueFire Live broadcasts with high-quality video, video-sync tab and notation, looping, jam tracks, Guitar Pro files, and all of the other learning tools available in TrueFire’s desktop, mobile and streaming apps.
In this episode of Live Plus: Blues Insights, Josh Smith goes deeper and wider on the concepts and techniques presented in his Blue Highways course. Using the same backing tracks he used in the course, all of Josh’s performances are fresh and original applications of his Blues Highways principles — and they’re ALL tabbed and video-synced!
You’ll get standard notation and tabs for all of the performance studies. Plus, you’ll be able to use TrueFire’s learning tools to sync the tab and notation to the video lesson. You can also loop or slow down the videos so that you can work with the lessons at your own pace. All of the backing tracks are included to work with on your own as well.

Josh Smith is an in-demand session player and touring blues guitarist who can do so much more. He's been playing the blues since he was 12 years old, but can play anything from country, jazz, rock and more. He's especially adept at combining all these influences back into his blues playing, joining a small handful of master guitarists who can do so.
Music Radar says about Josh, "Anyone who has witnessed one of Josh Smith's live performances comes away in awe of the man's ability to fuse jazz, blues and country in one neat package, with a technical ability that has to be seen to be believed."
We're talking to Josh today about his first TrueFire course, Blue Highways, in which he presents several of his technical and harmonic approaches to different types of blues progressions. Join us in welcoming Josh Smith to TrueFire Studios, and tune in to our Live session to hear some of his stellar playing.

Starting things off, Josh Smith gives an overview of Blue Highways - and what material he's drawn on to craft the course, as well as his journey with the blues throughout his career.
Brad and Josh talk about how to bring other types of music into the blues, and why looking to things you might not necessarily enjoy is essential for your guitar playing.

Josh talks about his journey around the world, and how traveling and playing guitar has made the world seem small and communicate with others, even if they don't speak the same language. Also, how he's been able to get to this point where he can travel the world and make it work, and the hard work it takes to get there.
For the first playing example, Josh takes us through a country guitar part and where he draws influence from guys like Danny Gatton and Roy Lanham.

Next, we'll look at a different style in Josh's repertoire - a New Orleans style groove in Bb. Lots of syncopated playing, taking influence from second line and funk parts.
