Joanne Shaw Taylor is storming the blues rock scene, leaving awestruck fans and rave reviews in her wake. “With her raw, soulful vocals and searing guitar riffs, she's not just playing the game—she's rewriting the rules and cementing her status as a global powerhouse.”

Known for her authentic and vibrant connection with audiences worldwide, Joanne’s Freestyle Blues masterclass draws on the spirit and freedom of the blues to help players discover their unique voice on their instrument.

“I’ve always been drawn to the blues. It grants us the utmost freedom to express ourselves authentically and forge a raw, real, and vibrant connection with our audience. My goal with this course is to help other blues players unleash their creativity and develop their voice and musicality.

I’ll share my influences, creative approaches, and the expressive techniques that I use to shape my playing. I’m excited to explore this space of musical freedom and genuine expression with you.”

Joanne will show you how to get optimal creative firepower using expressive techniques such as vibrato, phrasing, muting, raking, bending, and more. She demonstrates everything over backing tracks for an ideal musical context.

Throughout the masterclass, you’ll play and practice with Joanne. When ready, you’ll exercise your newfound creative freedom by soloing and improvising ‘freestyle’ alone.

You’ll have TrueFire’s interactive learning tools at your fingertips to customize your workspace and learn at your own pace.

The demonstrations and performances are tabbed, notated, and synced to the video lessons with controls for looping, slow motion, fretboard animation, and other tools designed to accelerate learning.

You’ll also get the tab and standard notation files to print out, downloadable Guitar Pro files for editing, and backing tracks for recording and practicing.

Grab your guitar, and let’s ‘freestyle’ with Joanne Shaw Taylor!

P.S. Check out Joanne’s companion Freestyle Blues edition of IN THE JAM for an immersive jamming experience. Put your ‘freestyle’ chops to work as if you were on stage with Joanne at a gig.

Freestyle Blues
I'm Joanne Shaw Taylor and welcome to Freestyle Blues.

I've always been drawn to the blues because it grants us the utmost freedom to express ourselves genuinely and authentically. It allows us to forge a connection that is raw, real, and vibrant with our audience. I'll describe and demonstrate many of my own creative approaches and techniques for rhythm and lead blues guitar.

However, the real goal of this course is to help you discover your own unique voice on the instrument. I'll share my influences, how I use vibrato, phrasing, muting, raking, and many other expressive techniques to shape my own playing. We'll apply everything over 10 tracks that I produced in the studio, covering a variety of blues progressions and feel.

I'm excited to share this space of musical freedom and genuine expression with you. Let's have a go!
Runaway
This is a jam based on a track called "Runaway." It's a really nice, melodic piece with a major key guitar part. The rhythm section is quite busy, so I'll be pushing you to keep up and try some new things today. Additionally, I'll show you how to solo in a major key and give you some ideas on incorporating major scales into your blues guitar playing. Let's get to work!

The Pentatonic Box
let's talk about the minor pentatonic scale, also known as the Blues Scale. It's like the bread and butter of blues guitar solos, you know? When I first started out, I kept it basic, sticking to the scale down here in the lower frets. But man, that scale stretches all over the neck, and that's where the real fun begins.

So, every day, I'd run through all the different patterns of the E minor pentatonic scale, from down low to way up high. It's all about getting comfy all over the fretboard, you feel me? Once you've got those patterns locked in, it's time to connect the dots and build your solo. Start small, find a lick you dig in each pattern, and let your creativity flow.

Just like putting together a puzzle, you start with one tasty lick, then another, and before you know it, you've got a killer solo that spans the whole neck. So, whether you're sliding up or sliding down, just keep it simple, find your groove, and let that guitar do the talking. It's all about finding your own sound and letting it shine.

Love her music

I'm a huge fan of Joanne Shaw Taylor and I was looking for some lessons for her songs for a long time, then I found this course on True Fire. I'm very happy with the material, it provides a good view from different povs on her work and she explains a lot of details around her style. I would recommend this course for everyone who wants to dive more deeply into her music and playing style.

Joanne Shaw Taylor's Freestyle Blues

The course did not meet my expectations at all. If you're looking for rock guitar with a bit of blues flavor, this is probably the right place, but not recommended for hardcore blues players. What's more, Joanne is a good guitarist but, as is so often the case with musicians, not the most great teacher. Too often she gives the advice to just mess around with the content presented. By the way, my impression of her overall performance was that she was still struggling with the aftermath of a hard night, for whatever reason. I liked the fact that I was able to return the course, which Alex from the TrueFire team made easy and convenient.
