Bridging The Blues

About this course

Rust Belt blues singer, guitarist, and bandleader Larry McCray has played with BB King, Buddy Guy, Albert King, John Mayall, Johnny Winter, Robert Cray, Keb’ Mo’, Jimmie Vaughan, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, and Joe Bonamassa.

Blending reverence for blues traditions with his own soulful spin on the form, Larry has been recognized with an Orville H. Gibson Male Blues Guitarist of the Year award and the Top Guitarist prize in the International Blues Matters writer's poll.

We’re thrilled to welcome Larry to the family with his first TrueFire interactive video course, Bridging the Blues!

”The blues is like a well-traveled road – we honor the old footprints yet stamp out our own unique path. I grew up in the rural south during a period when artists like BB King, Albert King, Luther Allison and others were playing that style of the blues that emerged from the post-war period. I feel blessed that I was able to get a first-hand dose of that.

In this course, we’ll explore how I build upon the spirit of the blues and push it forward while always staying mindful of the roots. We’ll examine how I emulate great gospel singers with vibrato, slides, and string bending in my solos and developing a solid right-hand attack by mixing fingertips and picking.

We’ll discuss classic rhythms like the Chicago lump, spicing-up progressions with smaller chord fragments, lick-enhancing techniques, and more. I’ll perform over ten rhythm tracks from my latest album to illustrate how I craft solos and rhythm parts, and I’ll give you lots of tips for making the most of what you already know.”

You’ll have TrueFire’s interactive learning tools at your fingertips to personalize your workspace and learn at your own pace.

The performances are tabbed, notated, and synced to the video with controls for looping, slow motion, fretboard animation, and many other tools. Backing tracks, Guitar Pro files, printable tab and notation are also included.

Grab your guitar, and let’s ‘bridge the blues’ with Larry McCray!
