About this course

Welcome to Play Bass 6: Groove Lexicon for late intermediate advanced students of bass guitar.

This Bass Learning Path core course is presented by 5 top TrueFire educators: Freekbass, David Santos, Stu Hamm, Andrew Ford and Andy Irvine.

The Groove Lexicon curriculum is comprised of select bass guitar lessons from the educators’ existing TrueFire course libraries.

More complex bass grooves call for a little more understanding of rhythms and feels, and a more refined technique. The lessons in this core course will take you deeper into the groove and give you the skills to move your playing to the next level.

Play Bass 6 is all about working on more advanced grooves and licks. Once you start to get your bass chops where you want them, the secret to really getting in the pocket is to push yourself into the next level by studying more difficult techniques.

The educators demonstrate all of the key examples over jam tracks (where and when applicable) to simulate a real-world application, in a musical context. All of the key examples are also tabbed and notated for your practice, reference and study purposes.

You’ll also get Guitar Pro files so that you can play, loop or slow down the tab and notation as you work through the lessons. Plus, you’ll have all of the available jam tracks to work with on your own.

Take as much time as you need to work through each video lesson before moving on to the next lesson. If you want to dig deeper or wider into any of the topics covered in this core course, check out the recommended supplementary courses in your learning path where you’ll find more examples, techniques and insight from top TrueFire educators.

Chromatic Man
Chromatic Man - Lick #4 is a video guitar lesson presented by Freekbass and is sourced from 50 Freekbass Licks You MUST Know.

With this lick in D I am using a double-thumb technique, where your thumb almost acts like a pick. That is how I started or discovered this technique.

I was playing in a band where we were doing driving and heavy type feels, and I never liked the idea of being trapped by a pick, because that would limit what I could do with my right hand. So I started using my thumb as a pick, and using both up and down motions, which opened up a whole new world of feel and rhythm to me.

This lick is just using simple octaves, but when you do a ghost or muted up and down attack between each note, it gives the rhythm a more moving and interesting feel.
C U Dorian
C U Dorian - Lick #5 is a video guitar lesson presented by Freekbass and is sourced from 50 Freekbass Licks You MUST Know.

This lick in C Dorian will show how to use plucking-pulloffs and percussive hand mutes to create a strong groovy bassline, almost like using your plucking hand like a snare drum.

The plucking notes are almost like snare drum hits or fills, and my double thumb technique is almost creating a 16th note percussion feel. On the last part of the line the thumb is almost all up-strokes which has a more "on top" kind of feel to the pocket.
C At The Palms - UP
C At The Palms - UP - Lick #12 is a video guitar lesson presented by Freekbass and is sourced from 50 Freekbass Licks You MUST Know.

This is the same lick as "C At The Palms", but up an octave. I always like hearing a lick I create in different octaves to see how the feel and sound is, and sometimes I will stack them in a loop on my loop station which I will show you a bit later.

With this version, I am starting on the 10th fret (C) on my D string. Again using my thumb as a pick, and doing a dampening palm mute with my right hand between each note. Even though we are in a different octave than the last version, you still want to strive to make each note sound as similar as the lower note in both attack, feel, and length.
A-Minor Blister
A-Minor Blister - Lick #14 is a video guitar lesson presented by Freekbass and is sourced from 50 Freekbass Licks You MUST Know.

With this lick I start by using an upstroke-ghost-mute before the "1" hits on the last 16th note of the 4th beat. You do not hear it so much, as feel it. Then I hammer from the minor 7th (the G) up to the root note (the A) on the E string. I then repeat this up the octave with a pluck.

At the end of the lick I am doing a triplet hammer pluck feel from the minor third (C) to the 4th (the D). That is created by hitting the open A string with your right hand thumb, and hammering up to the C (3rd fret) and then plucking the octave of C on the G string.
Tri it. You'll Like It
Tri it. You'll Like It - Lick #18 is a video guitar lesson presented by Freekbass and is sourced from 50 Freekbass Licks You MUST Know.

With this lick I am keeping in the similar mode as the last lick, creating a groovy bassline, that is also melodic. I wanted to show in the simplest way how to create this using some of the techniques we have already talked about.

To start, my note choices, I just picked 4 chord changes (Gm, Cm, Am, Dm). Nothing too deep, just using the root, third, 5th, and octave. For me, I remember as a kid always practicing scales and arppegios, triads, etc. But when it came time to making a bassline out of that I was always confused. I thought I had to turn into Beethoven all of a sudden. What I found out, is sometimes, what seems obvious and simple, is the way to write a good bassline, thus on this one, just using the root, 3rd, 5th, and octave.

As you see/hear I am again using a double-thump technique with some plucking at the end...it turns out pretty nice, nothing fancy, but in some songs, sometimes simple is best.
Hangin' with My G
Hangin' with My G - Lick #28 is a video guitar lesson presented by Freekbass and is sourced from 50 Freekbass Licks You MUST Know.

This line will involve a little bit of stretching for your left hand. We are starting on the G on the 5th fret of the D string then reaching down to the low G on the E string, keeping both octaves pressed down for a legato feel. You should use your middle finger on the low G because we will then move to the A and Bb on the G string while holding down the low G. Next move to the F on the D string and low F on the E string going to an open G and an A on the G string. Next an E (2nd fret) on the D string to open E followed by open G and A on G. The lick ends with a little run for melody on the G and D string.

The lick is pretty simple, but what makes it work and a little bit of a challenge is holding down the root notes of each note change. To me that sound is what gives it more of an eerie quality, and a little more darker sounding which I like with a lot of basslines like this.

Play bass Guitar 6: Groove Lexicon

'Groove', originally from jazz slang, is a sexual euphemism but to bring it more into Truefire worthiness lets say "aware of what gives pleasure". Then there's groovin' but we won't go there. Lexicon is a list of words belonging to a particular language and it's all right here ! The language of groove bringing you enormous pleasure. Though a Bass guitar 6 collection of lessons they are relevant to all levels and will enhance every aspect of your playing skill. From a 70's dance groove with tricky string crossing through funk and slap to a modest highly musical walking jazz line they are all incredibly infectious. There are abundant technical challenges if that's what your looking for, string crossing in the 70's dance groove or tapping and hammering groups of six semiquavers for a blues solo ! Freekbass gives you a double thumbing funk groove, Stu Hamm's ghosting notes for a Jaco groove and Andy Irvine's Bouncing Double Time Train Groove and this entire collection are all more than capable of laying down immense pleasure. Willie Weeks, a boogaloo or 'Sly's Time' using three techniques for one groove. this is an absolute gem of a collection presented by Truefire and should not be missed by any bass player with the urge to groove.
