About this course

Having command of a wide and versatile range of fingerpicking patterns is one of the most valuable creative resources for all players, electric or acoustic, across all styles from Rock to Folk, Country to Pop, to Funk and everything in between.

Whether you’re a songwriter, touring sideman or just love jamming with friends at the local club, any single fingerpicking pattern can be the creative nucleus for an original song, rhythm part, riff or motif for a solo.

”Across this collection of 30 Fingerpicking Innovations, we’ll explore arpeggio patterns, voice leading, alternating thumb patterns, cascading melodies, pinches, grace notes, open tunings and a ton of other essential approaches you can put to use in your own playing right away.

I'll demonstrate each of the fingerpicking patterns over a backing track and then break it down for you, move-by-move. Everything is tabbed and notated. and you’ll have all the backing tracks to work with on your own. Plus, you’ll have all of TrueFire’s Learning Tools to work with along the way.”

Vicki will demonstrate each of the fingerpicking patterns over a backing track and then break it down for you, note-by-note, move-by-move. You’ll get standard notation and tabs for all of the performance studies.

Plus, you’ll be able to use TrueFire’s learning tools to sync the tab and notation to the video lesson. You can also loop or slow down the videos so that you can work with the lessons at your own pace.

Arpeggio Sunrise
In classical guitar notation the letters p-i-m-a are used to indicate which finger you'll use on your 'picking' hand. It's based on the Italian names of each finger; p=thumb, i=index, m=middle and a=ring (anular in Italian!). I'll be using this notation throughout the course, so heads up when you hear me mention it! For this pattern, your thumb (p) is picking the bass note of each chord, and your subsequent fingers are picking the G, B and Hi E strings. Though it's not always the case, a general rule to go by is to use 'i' for the G string, 'm' for the B string and 'a' for the high E string. If you're new to fingerpicking or if you're new to using all of these fingers, let this exercise become second nature. It will make everything else we do much easier!
Inside Out
Inside Out is very similar to our first pattern, but we change the order of our top 3 strings. It may take some practice, but if you have gotten comfortable with the first pattern, you will get comfortable with this one too! A cool thing to do, kind of like 'extra credit' is to play this pattern on the chord progression from Pattern 1. In fact, you can interchange progressions and patterns in any way you like!
Lead by Voices
Lead by Voices adds what we call a 'pluck', which is picking 2 or more strings at the same time. We'll be plucking the 1st and 2nd strings together. Notice that your thumb only has to pick its bass note on the 1st beat of each measure.
Varying the Voices
Varying the Voices uses the same 'plucking' technique, still plucking the 1st and 2nd strings. I've added some different moves to your fretting hand, embellishing the chords a bit and creating some nice voice leading on the 1st and 2nd strings.
Twisted
By now your fingers should be comfortable with this plucking technique. For Twisted, I've changed the time signature to 3/4 instead of 4/4 and there are more chord changes than we've had so far. Pay particular attention to your thumb and making sure it's picking the correct bass notes.
Relax in Six
Relax in Six is played in a 6/4 time signature. We're still pluckng the 1st and 2nd strings, but now we're adding an additional pick with the thumb on the 4th or D string. Make sure you get the rhythm right in this one, the pattern starts out fairly busy, but each measure ends with a sense of 'spaciousness' as you hold the notes out for the last 3 beats.

Just what I was looking for

This course really spiced up my playing. I was stuck in a rut playing the same old patterns over the same old chord progressions but Vicki here really shined a light on some really creative rhythms that I could easily apply. If you enjoy fingerpicking and want to breathe some life into your jams this is the course for you. Hoping we can get ANOTHER 30 rhythms in the near future!
