Body of Rhythm

About this course

Developing solid rhythmic chops and a strong sense of “groove” is not just about working on your timing with a metronome, developing a wide vocabulary of rhythmic patterns, or learning the rhythmic approaches of your favorite players.

Of course these are all really important elements to focus on, but it's really “groove” that gets toes tapping and bodies moving. Vicki Genfan’s Body of Rhythm masterclass introduces you to an approach she calls ‘body centered rhythm’ — the catalyst that takes your rhythm guitar craft to the next level.

”Without involving their body in the process and practice of rhythm, players are neglecting one of the most important elements of groove.

I’ll show you a variety of tools, rhythmic approaches and effective ways to practice them to become more fluid and expressive rhythmically.

You’ll be able to easily and quickly apply these tools and approaches when learning a new strumming pattern, nailing a melody, soloing and improvising, or just keeping good time with other musicians.

No matter what level of guitar playing you’re at, you’ll benefit from the unique focus on ‘body centered rhythm’ throughout the course.”

In Section 1, Vicki reviews important concepts such as rhythm, beat, pulse and feel, as well as define the basics of reading rhythm: note values, rests, ties, dotted notes, slurs and bends.

In Section 2, Vicki has you focus on ‘body centered rhythm’. She’ll show you how to find your pulse, an exercise that will help you develop a new sense of flow and profoundly deepen your listening skills.

In Section 3, you’ll dive into a series of practice sessions putting ‘body centered rhythm’ principles to work in a musical context. These carefully crafted exercises will hone your coordination skills and help you vastly improve your ability to play more complex rhythms by integrating different combinations of strumming, clapping, stepping and speaking.

Lastly, Vicki will show you to apply everything covered in the course across 10 playalong practice sessions featuring 10 versatile strumming patterns that you can use in countless songs.

Vicki will also share her thoughts on how you can continue using this course as a regular part of your practice routine, how to track your progress, and a fun way to play with some of the ‘rhythm syllables’ that you’ve learned to create unique rhythm patterns.

Vicki will explain and demonstrate all of the key concepts and approaches along the way. You’ll get standard notation and tabs for all of the performance studies. Plus, you’ll be able to use TrueFire’s learning tools to sync the tab and notation to the video lesson.

You can also loop or slow down the videos so that you can work with the lessons at your own pace. All of the backing tracks are also included to work with on your own.

Grab your guitar, and let’s “groove” with Vicki Genfan!

Body of Rhythm
Developing rhythmic chops and a strong sense of Groove is not just about practicing with a metronome, watching videos of your favorite grooving musicians or even playing with other groovy people. These are all really important aspects of becoming a better rhythmic player, but a piece of music that makes us tap our toes and wiggle our hips does so because the rhythm is embodied in that player or band. Without involving our body in the process and practice of Rhythm, I believe we are missing one of the most important elements of GROOVE.

Whether you're trying to learn a new strumming pattern, nail a melody or solo from your favorite song, or keep time with other musicians, in this course, I'll provide you with the tools and practices to continually become more fluid and expressive rhythmically. No matter what level of guitar player you are, you'll benefit from the unique focus on ‘body centered rhythm’ throughout the course.

I've broken this course into 4 sections.

We'll start in section one with a review of important concepts such as rhythm, beat, pulse and feel, as well as defining the basics of reading rhythm: note values, rests, ties, dotted notes, slurs and bends. I’ll also introduce you ‘Taki-talk’, a simple set of syllables we’ll use that are interchangeable with 1+2+, etc.

In section two and three our focus will be on getting into our bodies. I'll show you how to find your pulse, an exercise that will help you develop a new sense of flow and profoundly deepen your listening skills.
Then we'll practice what I call the ‘Walk & Feel’ exercises, exploring two archetypal musical feels, 4 & 3.

Finally, in Section four, we'll dive into our rhythm practice studies. These carefully crafted exercises will hone your coordination skills and help you vastly improve your ability to play more complex rhythms by integrating different combinations of strumming, clapping, stepping and speaking. Lastly, I'll show you how to apply this approach to 10 simple strumming patterns that you can use in countless songs.

In the final section, I'll share my thoughts on how you can continue using this course as a regular part of your practice routine, how to apply the principles to figuring out a new rhythm pattern, how to track your progress, a fun way to play with some of the ‘rhythm syllables’ we’ve learned to create unique and odd metered patterns, and I'll make sure you have important links and resources that I've used for the course.

You’ll have pdfs of all the material we cover and all of the performances and exercises are transcribed so you’ll be able to sync the TAB and notation to the video using TrueFire’s learning tools. The backing tracks for our ‘Walk & Feel’ exercises are included as well as an additional version for each of them using different percussion instruments. You’ll be able to loop or slow down the videos so you can work with the lessons at your own pace.

How to Work with the Content
I’d suggest going through everything in order at first. Section 1 will be a review for those of you who are more seasoned players. The rest of the course, however, will most likely be new material and I highly recommend going through it all at least once so you can pick out the practices that you enjoy and feel will help you most. The more you practice these, the better you'll get at reading rhythms, keeping good time, playing with others, growing as an overall musician.
Rhythmic Terms & Symbols
The next section is short, so please go through it at least once to make sure that you're familiar with these terms and concepts!
Pulse & Beats
Pulse or pulsation is the recurring series of steady beats that underlie any piece of music and create the tempo. Beats can vary in length and can be divided to represent different lengths and rhythms. We call this subdivision of the beat. No need to memorize these terms at this point, but you may refer back here as we progress!
Rhythm
We create different rhythms over our steady pulse. Any melody has a certain rhythmic component. In this course we'll be working with Rhythm by itself.
Feel
It's really a fun exercise to play a piece of music you know if different 'feel's. Try it!
Groove
You know you're Grooving when you are moving your body in a flowing way while playing! When you listen or watch someone who is 'in the groove' you will want to move your body.

Rhythm Training

Anyone looking at the description of this course and thinking “this is just silly” (like I did), needs to take a second look. YES, it seems silly. I DARE you to try it. These are rhythm development exercises and movements designed to you help you internalize rhythm. There’s nothing silly about THAT, now is there?
