Groove Camp

About this course

Groove is second nature for bass players and drummers, but most guitar players can be a bit groove-challenged when it comes to finding "the pocket" and staying there. If your rhythm skills, sense of timing and overall groove is somewhat lacking -- pack your bags and head to the shed with Groove Camp, an intensive study program focused solely on rhythm, timing and groove.

Your Groove Camp leader is the inimitable Frank Vignola. Frank is one of the most accomplished, multi-dimensional players walking the planet today. Monster player, composer and improviser, Frank plays proficiently in every genre, from jazz to bluegrass, and works with everyone and their brother. Frank's pedigree is a mile long, but a quick Google will illustrate why there's no one better qualified to help you find the pocket and stay there.

Frank brought the band to the studio for this one; Rich Zukor on bass and percussion, Vinnie Raniolo on guitar and special guest host and master percussionist, Joe Ascione, a first-call, universally-respected drummer with 60-plus records to his credit. Your Groove Camp counselors thoroughly examine ten distinct "grooves" covering blues shuffles, driving rock, linear funk, jazz fusion and modern Latin grooves.

The real fun begins when you dig in with a variety of time signatures including 4/4, halftime, 5/4, 7/8, 9/8 and 11/8. Can you groove in all of these time signatures? You will soon! Groove Camp is a hands-on course with a break-through approach for fixing what ails your groove without relying on tedious rhythm exercises and boring tutorials on timing. Rather, students play their way through the material from the ground up, first by studying how the groove is established with bass and drums, and then learning how to lock in the perfect rhythm guitar part. Frank ices the cake by demonstrating how to solo in and around the groove. The course also includes a percussion/rhythm master class from Joe Ascione. Groove Camp covers it all.

Groove Camp
As guitarists we should know more about rhythm. We learn a lot of harmony and scalar patterns but I feel we don't learn enough about rhythm. Hence the Groove Camp. In this first edition of the Groove Camp series I chose to work with master drummer Joe Ascione along with Rich Zukor and Vinny Raniolo in order to help us concentrate on different rhythms and odd time grooves. In this camp we will learn different rhythms that we will try to internalize. We will play odd time signatures in order to open up our ears, throw away our licks and patterns and free up our playing concentrating on the groove and listening to the rhythm section as opposed to regurgitating patterns and riffs. It is important to clap along, play along and sing along with each of the bass parts in order to internalize the rhythm. But most of all enjoy, experiment and jam as this is what the groove camp is all about.

Shuffle
The Shuffle groove is one of the most used in the music business. We thought it would be best to start with this groove in order to start thinking about some key things that are essential to playing more in the pocket. Listening is number 1. Knowing what the bass and drums are playing. We start every groove with the simple task of clapping, singing and then playing what the bass player is playing and trying to understand what the drummer is doing. The back beat is important in this groove. The drummer is playing a real neat pattern on the hi hat. Notice his bass drum pattern and try to listen in to how it correlates with the bass pattern. Both as a rhythm guitarist and a soloist, I listen very carefully to the bass and drums so as to try to elevate the music by zoning in on the groove. Sing along, dance along and play along.

Shuffle
In this section we will concentrate on the shuffle groove in the key of E. Clap on the back beats. In all these lessons we will clap along and play what the bass player is playing in order to understand the groove of each tune better. Listen to the drums and bass. I played along with what the bass is playing and used question and answer within the rhythm guitar parts. The groove is thick on this one. Vinny joined me on this one and we played different parts. I played along with the bass and he played some more stylistic shuffle parts. During the solo track you will hear me playing riff style concentrating on listening to the drums and bass and locking into the groove. Pentatonic melodic playing.

Linear Funk
In this linear funk groove we are introduced to the term ostinato which is a repeated pattern. When you listen and view the bass and drum video 2 clip you will notice the hi hat playing a great ostinato pattern. Again clap and play along with the bass player so you can get more in tune with the groove. Also we learn about linear playing on the drums. A repeated pattern utilizing different drums to reinforce the groove. Very important if we as guitarists want to feel comfortable in the pocket that we know and feel and be able to play what the bass player is playing and understand where the drummer is coming from simply by gaining more knowledge of what the drummer is playing. This is what this course is all about. Funk out!
