About this course

Welcome to Play Jazz Guitar 8: Advanced Rhythm Principles for late intermediate to advanced students of Jazz guitar.

This Jazz Learning Path core course is presented by 3 top TrueFire educators: Fareed Haque, Frank Potenza and Howard Morgen.

The Advanced Rhythm Principles curriculum is comprised of select Jazz guitar lessons from the educators’ existing TrueFire course libraries.

Guitarists with advanced rhythm guitar skills write their own ticket with respect to paying or playing opportunities. Other musicians love to round out their rhythm section with solid, versatile rhythm guitarists. Pros will always get the most lucrative gigs, and amateurs will always get to play with the very best. The video guitar lessons in this core course will focus on strengthening and broadening your rhythm skills to an advanced level.

Play Jazz Guitar 8: Advanced Rhythm Principles is organized into 3 sections. In the first section, Fareed Haque reveals more of his insightful “Trade Secrets” for jazz comping. Howard Morgen shares chord concepts, which he demonstrates over two performance studies. Frank Potenza wraps up the course with jazz harmony applications in the third and final section. All three sections will advance your understanding of the key underlying harmonic qualities for the rhythm parts and comping applications you’ll be crafting at this level of play.

When you’ve completed the lessons here in Advanced Rhythm Principles, you’ll find more lessons focused on rhythm in Advanced Rhythm Approaches, also a Play Jazz Guitar 8 core course.

The educators demonstrate all of the key examples over jam tracks (where and when applicable) to simulate a real-world application, in a musical context. All of the key examples are also tabbed and notated for your practice, reference and study purposes.

You’ll also get Guitar Pro files so that you can play, loop or slow down the tab and notation as you work through the lessons. Plus, you’ll have all of the available jam tracks to work with on your own.

Take as much time as you need to work through each video guitar lesson before moving on to the next lesson. If you want to dig deeper or wider into any of the topics covered in this core course, check out the recommended supplementary courses in your learning path where you’ll find more examples, techniques and insight from top TrueFire educators.

Comping Concepts
In this section, Fareed Haque shares 6 more ‘Trade Secrets" focused on emulating horn section backgrounds and stabs, as well as B3 pedal points. You'll learn how to invert color tones, comp for yourself, and work with guide tones. Fareed wraps up the section with a series of performance studies over a I-vi-ii-V Progression.

TIP! Being a good rhythm guitarist starts with having a good sense of timing and being able to play in the pocket. But once you have a good handle on that, then you need to expand your options - both rhythmically and harmonically.

A great way to do this is by listening to other players who are great rhythm guitarists. Hear how they apply different variations and make note of what their choices are.

It helps to break your rhythm practice into those two areas - work on rhythm variations and different feels and grooves. Then work on using other harmonic options, different chord inversions and voicings. If you systematically experiment with testing out other options you will naturally gravitate towards the ones that are YOUR style, and you can further develop those, and then you will become that hip rhythm player that other people listen to!
Fareed's Trade Secret #4
Fareed's Trade Secret #4 - Imitation: Horn Section is a video guitar lesson presented by Fareed Haque and is sourced from Jazz Comping Survival Guide.

Most of the chords we've built translate perfectly to a big band horn section. In fact if you wrote a short blues on the guitar, guide tones plus 2 extensions, and asked four saxes to play it, it will sound good. So if you are wondering what to do in a small group, try imitating horn section 'backgrounds'. Backgrounds are the horn lines and riffs played behind a soloist. They are background simple melody lines that will support and add excitement to the solo. By imitating a horn section we can have the same effect. As a horn section would, use short and long notes to create drive. Make sure your melody is simple and outlines the harmony clearly. The best way to figure this out is to listen to big band music! Ellington, Basie, Miller, James, Kenton, Mel Lewis/Thad Jones, Gil Evans and many others.
Fareed's Trade Secret #5
Fareed's Trade Secret #5 - Horn Section Stabs is a video guitar lesson presented by Fareed Haque and is sourced from Jazz Comping Survival Guide.

Short sharp attacks on guide tones and 2 extension chords sound like a trumpet section, especially if up high.
Fareed's Trade Secret #6
Fareed's Trade Secret #6 - Horn Section Backgrounds is a video guitar lesson presented by Fareed Haque and is sourced from Jazz Comping Survival Guide.

Use simple melody line harmonized with guide tones and 2 extensions to create sax section sound.
Fareed's Trade Secret #7
Fareed's Trade Secret #7 - Stabs & Backgrounds is a video guitar lesson presented by Fareed Haque and is sourced from Jazz Comping Survival Guide.

Combine the 2 to sound like a big band. Be careful not to get too busy!
Fareed's Trade Secret #8
Fareed's Trade Secret #8 - Imitation: B3 Pedal Points is a video guitar lesson presented by Fareed Haque and is sourced from Jazz Comping Survival Guide.

Repetition is a very easy and powerful way to build intensity. B3 players will often hold a high note, called a pedal point, while they comp down below, or solo under the high held note. Work on holding one note through an entire chord progression to develop this skill. Especially cool are holding the 9, #9, 13, root or 5th on top, and letting the repetition build and build. BouYah!
