About this course

Welcome to Play Jazz Guitar 7: Style Variations for intermediate to late Intermediate students of Jazz guitar.

This Jazz Learning Path core course is presented by 5 top TrueFire educators: Fareed Haque, Carl Verheyen, Brad Carlton, Paul Brown, and David Blacker.

The Style Variations curriculum is comprised of select Jazz guitar lessons from the educators’ existing TrueFire course libraries.

One of the qualities that attracts all of us to the guitar is the virtually infinite range of styles and techniques that are possible on the instrument. Having a grasp on a wide variety of styles and techniques not only broadens your musicality, it opens the door to many more playing opportunities with other musicians. You’ll gain more clarity on the instrument overall and expressing yourself on it will become a richer experience. The video guitar lessons in this core course will diversify your skill set and help take your playing to the next level.

Play Jazz Guitar 7: Style Variations is organized into 5 sections. In the first section, you’ll explore some serious jazz rock with Carl Verheyen. A taste of Smooth Jazz from Paul Brown is featured in the second section. Section 3 passes on a versatile collection of jazz funk chord studies from Brad Carlton. In Section 4, Fareed Haque gives you a taste of acid jazz. David Blacker rounds the course out with a series of swing blues studies, in the final section.

When you’ve completed the lessons here in Style Variations, you’ll find more lessons focused on technique variations in Style Diversity, also a Play Jazz Guitar 7 core course.

The educators demonstrate all of the key examples over jam tracks (where and when applicable) to simulate a real-world application, in a musical context. All of the key examples are also tabbed and notated for your practice, reference and study purposes.

You’ll also get Guitar Pro files so that you can play, loop or slow down the tab and notation as you work through the lessons. Plus, you’ll have all of the available jam tracks to work with on your own.

Take as much time as you need to work through each video guitar lesson before moving on to the next lesson. If you want to dig deeper or wider into any of the topics covered in this core course, check out the recommended supplementary courses in your learning path where you’ll find more examples, techniques and insight from top TrueFire educators.

Jazz Rock
In this section, Carl Verheyen guides you through 2 fusion funk performance studies. Carl will first demonstrate a soloing example over a jam track, and then break it down emphasizing the techniques and concepts in play. This first soloing example is over a G7 funky vamp, and starts out with minor and major pentatonics and then adds the Mixolydian mode to the mix. The second soloing example features the diminished scale and demonstrates it's use over the dominant 7 chord to achieve a more altered sound.

TIP! One of the best pieces of advice I ever got as a player, was to "learn it - then do it your own way". At first that seems counter-intuitive. Afterall we are trying to really nail the lessons we are working on, and once we do that… then we are supposed to change it? YES! Throughout history players have been borrowing, or outright stealing others licks and ideas, and then changing them to make them their own. Basically you have to start somewhere as you are developing your own voice on the guitar, so it makes sense to learn something that is already pretty cool, and then put your own spin on it. Try it out, learn a new lick or pattern, but then instead of just moving on to something else - look at how you can tweak, adapt, extend, change and make it your own.

This first track is a G7 funky vamp, starting out by playing minor and major pentatonics and adding in the Mixolydian mode as we go. But first, let's look at a quick little warm up exercise that I like.

Using minor pentatonic to start, I shift pretty quickly into the Mixolydian mode. Towards the end, I use major and minor pentatonics again and play some interesting intervallic lines in the Mixolydian mode.

Here I'll focus on the Mixolydian mode in G and discuss range. Make your modes move up and down the neck and try to get away from being a "top-3-strings-1-position" player.
Fusion Funk G7: 2
Fusion Funk G7: 2 - Overview is a video guitar lesson presented by Carl Verheyen and is sourced from S.W.A.T. Sessions: Jazz Rock.

In this lesson, we'll talk about the diminished scale and it's use over the dominant 7 chord. I believe this is one of the quickest ways to get you into playing over a 7th chord in a more "altered" way.

Starting with a melodic statement in major pentatonic and Mixolydian, I move into a diminished tonal center a half step up from the root. This gives me the following tensions: flat 9, #9, 3rd, b5, 5th, 13th, and root.
