About this course
Welcome to Play Acoustic Guitar 4: Rhythm Principles for intermediate to late Intermediate students of Acoustic guitar.
This Acoustic Learning Path core course is presented by 3 top TrueFire educators: Laurence Juber, Massimo Varini, and Brad Carlton.
The Rhythm Principles curriculum is comprised of select Acoustic guitar lessons from the educators’ existing TrueFire course libraries.
Guitarists spend 90% of their time on the bandstand playing rhythm guitar behind vocals and other musicians’ solos, which is why it’s critical to develop solid rhythm skills. Having command of a wide range of chord voicings, rhythm patterns and creative approaches is what distinguishes great players from the mediocre, and it’s also the number one reason that other musicians will want you in their band or invite you back to the jam. The video guitar lessons in this core course will equip you with the technical and creative skills you need to take your rhythm guitar playing to the next level.
Play Acoustic Guitar 4: Rhythm Principles is organized into 3 sections. In the first section, Massimo Varini guides you through 16 key rhythm techniques and applications from pick selection to rhythm figures to strumming patterns and everything in between. Laurence Juber takes over in the Section 2 with the 16 key concepts and techniques that comprise his rhythm method. Brad Carlton wraps up this core course with 6 demonstrations and playalongs focused on beautiful sounding, ringing open string chords.
When you’ve completed the lessons here in Rhythm Principles, you’ll find more lessons focused on Acoustic rhythm guitar in Rhythm Approaches, also a Play Acoustic Guitar 4 core course.
The educators demonstrate all of the key examples over jam tracks (where and when applicable) to simulate a real-world application, in a musical context. All of the key examples are also tabbed and notated for your practice, reference and study purposes.
You’ll also get Guitar Pro files so that you can play, loop or slow down the tab and notation as you work through the lessons. Plus, you’ll have all of the available jam tracks to work with on your own.
Take as much time as you need to work through each video guitar lesson before moving on to the next lesson. If you want to dig deeper or wider into any of the topics covered in this core course, check out the recommended supplementary courses in your learning path where you’ll find more examples, techniques and insight from top TrueFire educators.

Massimo Varini kicks things off in the first section with right-hand strumming techniques for quarter-note, eighth-note, triplet, sixteenth-note and shuffle rhythms. Massimo dives even deeper into rhythm applications for emphasizing bass notes, dividing up and down strokes, modifying patterns, changing chords seamlessly and working with 12/8 rhythms. You'll also learn how to 'think in 16ths' to craft countless rhythm patterns of your own. Get a grip on these essential principles and you'll be equipped to handle virtually the entire popular music songbook.
TIP! When you start to work on rhythm parts, remember that the number one thing you should be concerned with is staying in time! This might sound obvious, but sometimes it is easy to get distracted by trying to get a cool move or technique down and we forget about keeping it in time!
So always work on a rhythm part slowly at first, using a metronome to make sure the whole thing is staying in time. If you find one part where you keep losing time, then stop and just work on that part until you get it solid. Remember, rhythm is built from the ground up - so make sure you lay the foundation of a groove before you start to worry about all the fancy stuff!

Pick Selection - Sonic Quality: 1 is a video guitar lesson presented by Massimo Varini and is sourced from Pop Guitar Survival Guide.Sometimes we do not think that the significant changes in sound may come from things that are inexpensive. One of these things is the pick. In the video let's listen together to some different sounds, using picks of different thicknesses and different material. It's important to note that the hardness of the pick can also affect the way we play as well as the sound.
Pick Positioning - Sonic Quality: 2 is a video guitar lesson presented by Massimo Varini and is sourced from Pop Guitar Survival Guide.Let's examine together how to find other sounds but without changing the pick. We will see how to use the elasticity of the material holding the pick more or less firmly between the fingers, more or less protruding from thumb and forefinger.
Right-Hand Strumming Technique - Rhythm Fundamentals: 1 is a video guitar lesson presented by Massimo Varini and is sourced from Pop Guitar Survival Guide. Before entering into the exercise part of this section, it's very important to start with a good setup. So let's start with a medium pick (like a 0.6 mm). Pay attention to the pick's position and be very quick crossing the strings: pay attention to avoid the brush effect!
Quarter Note Rhythms - Rhythm Fundamentals: 2 is a video guitar lesson presented by Massimo Varini and is sourced from Pop Guitar Survival Guide. We will start with muted strings. Don't mind where you put the hand on the fingerboard - just mute the strings and concentrate on the quarter notes! Start with the quarter notes, downstroke, then upstroke. Let's play along on the backing track that I've prepared for you!
Eighth Note Rhythms - Rhythm Fundamentals: 3 is a video guitar lesson presented by Massimo Varini and is sourced from Pop Guitar Survival Guide. It's time to move on eighth note rhythms. We need two movements for each quarter note, one downstroke and one upstroke.
