About this course

Welcome to Play Acoustic Guitar 1: Quick-Start for Beginners - the first stop on your TrueFire Learning Path journey towards becoming a solid Acoustic guitar player.

If you already know several chords and strumming patterns, and can also play some songs and single note lines, then you’re ready to take on this quick-start guitar course. Otherwise, please check out TrueFire’s Learn Guitar courses to get a grip on those basic skills.

This Acoustic Learning Path core course is presented by 3 top TrueFire educators: Corey Congilio, Brooks Robertson, and David Hamburger.

They’ll guide your development of the essential skills and get up and running quickly -- no reading music, no boring exercises, no tedious theory to struggle through. In fact, you’ll play your way through the entire course.

You’ll start off the course learning a classic rhythm pattern to get you in the groove. You’ll also learn a progression that’s used in thousands of songs. Fingerstyle techniques are very important skills to develop and you’ll learn a versatile Fingerstyle pattern that you can use in any song. Acoustic guitarists use a variety of techniques to express musical ideas, and you’ll tackle some of the essentials here. You’ll also learn some acoustic blues, a 12 bar progression, and wrap the course up with more new chords and essential rhythm patterns.

The educators demonstrate all of the key examples over jam tracks (where and when applicable) to simulate a real-world application, in a musical context. All of the key examples are also tabbed and notated for your practice, reference and study purposes.

You’ll also get Guitar Pro files so that you can play, loop or slow down the tab and notation as you work through the lessons. Plus, you’ll have all of the available jam tracks to work with on your own.

Take as much time as you need to work through each video guitar lesson before moving on to the next lesson. If you want to dig deeper or wider into any of the topics covered in this core course, check out the recommended supplementary courses in your learning path where you’ll find more examples, techniques and insight from top TrueFire educators.

G to Cadd9 Strum
Getting down a basic strum can be even cooler when you throw in the Cadd9 chord. There are always little things you can do to spice up both chord progressions and strumming patterns. Start with this strum and make sure you take your time and keep your technique clean. Don't rush your strumming.
Practice Session 1
This Practice Session starts out at 65 BPM. Play it as many times as you need before you move on.
Practice Session 2
In this Practice Session, you'll be playing along with the instructor. Take your time and don't rush through it.

Practice this as many times as you need to before moving on.
Practice Session 3
Let's have some fun! In this Practice Session we jam with the band! Take your time, don't worry about doing it perfectly the first time, just keep going over it until you have it all down smooth. Then you're ready to move on.
Single Note Melody
Playing isn't always about chords, sometimes it's about single note melodies. When you're playing single notes it may seem harder at first since you'll have to be more accurate with your pick placement, but once you get a "feel" for where you hand will be, it will be no problem to pick out certain strings and notes.
Practice Session 4
Your instructor will guide you through this Practice Session.

Don't move on until you feel like you are locked in with the tempo and are playing it cleanly.

Worth it to start with this course

The steady base method to play fingerstyle blues is really fun. This is the place to start to learn that technique. The instructors are great. I primarily strum and flatpick, but wanted to learn fingerstyle as well. The beginner fingerstyle lessons are nice place to start. I look forward to more lessons on strumming and flatpicking in the subsequent learning path courses. Overall, I am very happy with the value of this Level 1 course.
