About this course

“In Matt Schofield, the UK has produced the best blues guitarist from any country in decades.” L.A. DAILY NEWS
Singer, songwriter, bandleader, and blues guitar virtuoso, Matt Schofield “continues to push the frontiers and reshape the boundaries of the British Blues tradition.” Recognized three years in a row as British Blues Awards Guitarist of the Year, inducted into the British Blues Hall of Fame, and cited as one of only two living British artists to achieve the maximum four-star rating by the Penguin Book of Blues Recordings — Matt’s impact as one of the most distinctive guitarists of his generation is unquestionable.
“The UK’s most exciting blues guitar player.” GUITARIST, UK
We’re thrilled to welcome Matt to the family with his first TrueFire course, Blues Speak! You will likewise be thrilled when you grab your guitar and play your way through Matt’s extraordinarily illuminating electric blues guitar learning experience.

”Playing the blues is the ultimate form of expression for myself… and the guitar is the perfect vehicle for that expression. I use the term “blues speak” to describe how we communicate through the instrument to articulate our feelings, emotions, and tell our stories.

In this course, I’m excited to share the core principles of my own playing and hope this will inspire your own musicality – whatever level player you happen to be. I hope you’ll find the material liberating so you can speak the blues more freely yourself.”

Matt organized the course into two sections. In the first section, Matt presents a series of 12 ear-opening techniques and concepts with lesson segments for each on the concept, approach, performance demos, and playalongs:

Rhythm as a Springboard, Simple, Not Easy!, Death by Slow Blues Workout, Playing Across the Neck, How to Approach Blues Changes, More Outside Changes, Integrating Your Influences, Integrating Your Influences, Playful Phrasing, More Advanced Blues Harmony, Tone and Tone Production, and The Gear & The Hands.

”In the first section of the course, we're going to be looking at the most important concepts that form the core of how I approach playing blues guitar, and music as a whole. While there may be certain technical elements to master, the focus here is on my overall approach and philosophy to blues guitar playing, as well as providing musical foundations that will serve you well. Regardless of your current vocabulary or level of proficiency, I hope working through this course will help you speak the language of the blues more freely, and better than ever!”

In the second section, Matt will perform and break down 7 soloing performance studies over a variety of blues feels and different keys to illustrate how he approaches ‘speaking’ the blues. ”We’ll play slow blues, shuffles, west coast swing, rhumba feel, and even a New Orleans second line groove.”

Matt performs the solos over backing tracks and then breaks them down emphasizing the concepts and techniques being applied.

Matt will explain and demonstrate all of the key concepts and approaches along the way.  You’ll get standard notation and tabs for the soloing performance studies and key demonstrations. Plus, Matt includes all of the backing tracks for you to work with on your own. In addition, you’ll be able to loop or slow down any of the videos so that you can work with the lessons at your own pace.

Blues Speak
Hello, I'm Matt Schofield and welcome to BluesSpeak.

Playing the blues is the ultimate form of expression for myself...and guitar is the perfect vehicle for that expression. I use the term "blues speak" to describe how we communicate through the instrument to articulate our feelings, emotions and tell our stories.

In this course, I'm excited to share the core principles of my own playing, and hope this will inspire your own musicality – whatever level player you happen to be. I hope you'll find the material liberating so you can speak the blues more freely yourself.

I've organized the course into two sections. In the first section, I'll guide you through what I consider some of the fundamentals of the language of the blues. I'll share philosophies and insight and we'll play through each concept with interactive playalong sessions and demonstrations over backing tracks.

Then in the second section, I'll perform and break down seven solos over a variety of blues feels and different keys to show you how I approach speaking the blues. We'll play slow blues, shuffles, west coast swing, rhumba feel, and even a New Orleans second line groove.

All of the key examples are tabbed and notated and you'll have all the backing tracks to work with. You can loop or slow down any of the videos so that you can work with the lessons at your own pace.

SECTION 1: Essential Concepts
In the first section of the course, we're going to be looking at the most important concepts that form the core of how I approach playing blues guitar, and music as a whole. While there may be certain technical elements to master, the focus here is on my overall approach and philosophy to blues guitar playing, as well as providing musical foundations that will serve you well. Regardless of your current vocabulary or level of proficiency, I hope working through this course will help you speak the language of the blues more freely, and better than ever!
Rhythm as a Springboard
For me, all music to me begins from the rhythm. The groove! As guitar players, we often get hung up on scales, licks, patterns and "where to put our fingers"! My focus when I'm performing is largely on the groove, and then the tone. Remember, you can say a lot and make great music with just a couple of notes if the phrasing is good and the tone sounds inviting. This sense of rhythm and time is not something found externally, or even from a drummer. It's about feeling the rhythm in your body, right down to your fingertips touching the guitar. You are the rhythm and the rhythm is you!
Rhythm as a Springboard
In this performance, I take a simple rhythmic figure to set up a theme and then gradually build the complexity of the part. We'll go from full chords to single note lines whilst always keeping that original rhythmic feel grooving throughout to tie it together.
Rhythm as a Springboard
Let's trade back and forth over a funky New Orleans groove now. We're going to keep it harmonically simple; just a couple of notes. See if you can capture the rhythmic figures I play, and then play them back to me. Concentrate on grooving, being "in the pocket" and getting a good tone out of the guitar.
Simple, Not Easy!
One of the most wonderful things about the blues is its simplicity. But that doesn't mean it's easy to play! Far from it! Refining something down to it's basic essence, yet having it stand strong, is one of the hardest things to achieve in any artistic medium.

One of my favorite things to do is to play a slow blues. It's the perfect platform to express yourself via the instrument. Again, we're keeping the focus here on timing, phrasing and tone. You don't need to play a lot of notes if you have those other ingredients!
Simple, Not Easy!
We're going to play over a 12-bar slow blues progression in C and see how much we can get out of a few notes. We're going to limit ourselves to using just the root note, minor 3rd and 4th. We can bend them, shape them, add vibrato, and do anything we can to extract the most out of the the notes, whilst removing our concern for running up and down scales and all over the neck. This is a great exercise to build your phrasing and timing and getting the most of of a few notes. This will serve you well when you start adding more notes!

Excellent course!

Probably the best course I’ve done on TrueFire. You need to have a pretty good foundation in the scales used in blues beforehand.
