TrueHeart Blues: Soloing

About this course

A great solo is an extension of the song -- it's memorable, it's hummable, and it's unique to the soloist and the way he or she tells a story. Players like B.B. King, Albert King, Otis Rush, Chris Cain, Larry Carlton, and Robben Ford all have an almost vocal-like expressiveness in their soloing and it makes them immediately recognizable.

A follow-up to the highly-rated Rhythm edition, this Soloing edition of TrueHeart Blues, Kirk Fletcher shares a collection of his philosophies on soloing and improvisation, a few go-to scales and licks, and he'll hip you to some of the influences that inspired him at a very young age and helped form his personal approach to soloing on the guitar and telling his own story on the instrument.

"We'll work on key approaches like building motifs out of major and minor blues scales, outlining changes, incorporating gospel sounds, swing & chicago blues influences, vibrato, bending, dynamics, and a lot more. Working with live band backing tracks, we'll play our way through 10 soloing studies across a variety of feels and keys and I'll point out some of the key highlights from each. We'll wrap up the course with a trio of solos I'll play over some tunes from my own records. We'll solo over "El Medio Stomp", "Two Steps Forward" and "Times Tickin'"."

Kirk will explain and demonstrate all of the key concepts and approaches along the way. You’ll get standard notation and tabs for all of the performance studies. Plus, you’ll be able to use TrueFire’s learning tools to sync the tab and notation to the video lesson. You can also loop or slow down the videos so that you can work with the lessons at your own pace. All of the backing tracks are included to work with on your own as well.

Grab your guitar and let’s get started with Kirk Fletcher!

TrueHeart Blues: Soloing Edition
Hi, I'm Kirk Fletcher. Welcome to the Soloing Edition of TrueHeart Blues.

For me, a great solo is an extension of the song. Its memorable, it's hummable, and it's unique to the soloist and the way he or she tells a story. Players like BB King, Albert King, Otis Rush, Chris Cain, Larry Carlton, and Robben Ford all have an almost vocal like expressiveness in their soloing - and it makes them immediately recognizable.

In this soloing edition of TrueHeart Blues, I'll share a collection of my philosophies on soloing and improvisation, a few go-to scales and licks, and I'll hip you to some of the influences that inspired me at a very young age and helped form my personal approach to soloing on the guitar - really telling my own story on the instrument.

We'll work on key approaches like building motifs out of major and minor blues scales, outlining changes, incorporating gospel sounds, swing & chicago blues influences, vibrato, bending, dynamics, and a lot more.

Working with live band backing tracks, we'll play our way through 10 soloing studies across a variety of feels and keys and I'll point out some of the key highlights from each.

We'll wrap up the course with a trio of solos I'll play over some tunes from my own records. We'll solo over "El Medio Stomp", "Two Steps Forward" and "Times Tickin'".

All of the solos are tabbed and notated and you'll be able to sync the tab and notation to the video using TrueFire's learning tools. All of the backing tracks are included and you can loop or slow down any of the videos so you can work with the lessons at your own pace.

Ready to get started? Grab your guitar, and let's go.
SECTION 1: Soloing Studies
In this first section, I'll take you through 10 concepts for soloing, over 10 backing tracks. Along the way, I'll point out some of the "highlights" of each performance. Let's dig in.
Solo Study 1: Scales & Motifs
I'll cover my way of using the major and minor pentatonic scale and major and minor blues scales, also looking at connecting them all over the neck of the guitar. I'll also play some motifs and demonstrate how I use these scales while creating lines.
Solo Study 1: Scales & Motifs
In this performance section, I play some of my favorite licks and phrases over a funky one chord vamp.
Solo Study 1: Scales & Motifs
In this highlight section, I'll pick apart some of my favorite ideas for the performance section. Hope you enjoy!
Solo Study 2: Outlining Changes
In this video, I'll give you some simple licks for over each chord in a 12 bar blues. I will also talk about common notes for 12 bar blues progression. I'll also talk about simple phrases over Emaj7 and B11. I use on some examples one note to state the 4 and 5 chords.
Solo Study 2: Outlining Changes
For this performance section, I play a slow blues with just a few notes stating the chords. I also play a section without the rhythm guitar and bass so you can still hear the chord changes as they go by.
