Blues-Rock Masterclass

About this course

One of today’s top live performers, Joe Bonamassa, has redefined the blues-rock genre with twenty-four #1 Billboard Blues Albums (more than any other artist in history!) and two Grammy nominations to his credit.

We’re very proud to announce that Joe has chosen TrueFire to collaborate with on the production of his very first series of guitar instructional products.

In this Blues-Rock Masterclass, Joe uses 10 of his songs as the guitar lesson framework for sharing his creative approaches, key influences, and techniques for crafting rhythm guitar parts, improvising solos, performing, and writing songs.

”We’ll be working with the actual tracks from my studio recordings, but I’ve filmed new rhythm and lead guitar parts to make them distinctive and give them more of a live vibe to better serve the lessons in this course.

For each song, you’ll have rhythm and lead guitar performance videos with multi-angle views and close-ups of both hands. I’ll not only show you how to play key parts of each song, but I’ll also share many of the rhythm guitar and soloing techniques that I use all of the time, on stage and in the studio.”

You’ll learn a wide range of rhythm and lead guitar techniques as Joe Bonamassa breaks down the songs he selected for this Blues Rock Masterclass for guitar: Blue And Evil, Bridge To Better Days, Dislocated Boy, Last Kiss, Lonesome Road Blues, Dust Bowl, The Ballad of John Henry, Story Of A Quarryman, Django, and Happier Times.

”Throughout the course, I’ll also demonstrate how my sound was influenced by some of the artists that inspired me as I was growing up. We’ll examine a few of the techniques and stylistic approaches I picked up from Danny Gatton, Eric Johnson, Jimi Hendrix, B.B. King, Eric Clapton, and Jeff Beck.

I’ll also walk you through the guitars and gear that I used in the production of this course and talk about The Snakebite, Tool #1, Bonnie Strat, my amp rig, and how I dial in my tone.”

All of the rhythm and lead guitar parts are tabbed, notated, and synced to the video performance. Using TrueFire’s guitar lesson tools, you can loop any section of a song and slow down any of the videos to learn the parts at your own pace. For guitar players just starting, there’s even an option to view an easy-chord scrolling guide, which is also synced to the video.

P.S. Want to play along with Joe and the band? Check out the Joe Bonamassa edition of In The Jam! You can mix, mute, or solo any of the parts of these same 10 Joe Bonamassa songs. You play the rhythm parts, and Joe will play the lead, or you take the lead, and Joe will play rhythm. If you sing or play bass, drums, keys — mute those tracks and jump in the mix.

In this MASTERCLASS, we’ll use 10 of my own songs as a framework for sharing many of my key approaches, influences, and techniques for writing songs, crafting rhythm parts and improvising solos.

We’ll be working with the actual tracks from my studio recordings BUT I’ve filmed and recorded new rhythm and lead guitar parts to give them more of a live vibe and better serve the lessons.

For each of the songs, you’ll have a rhythm guitar performance video and a lead guitar performance video with multi-angle views and close-ups of both hands.

I’ll demonstrate how my own sound and music has been influenced by many of the artists that inspired me as I was growing up and continue to inspire me to this day.

We’ll talk about tone, how I prefer to dial it in, and I’ll walk you through the guitars and gear that I’ve used in the production of this course.

Blue And Evil
Blue and Evil is an ominous and uptempo song I wrote while in Santorini, Greece. It appeared on the album Black Rock, named after the recording studio on the island. I was heavily inspired by the bands Free and Led Zeppelin and I think you can really hear that in this tune.
Blue And Evil
Now let’s jump into the rhythm performance of Blue and Evil. Remember to utilize tab sync to ensure you’re hitting the right notes, or play along using the provided jam track!
Blue And Evil
Now let’s jump into the lead performance of Blue and Evil. Remember to utilize tab sync to ensure you’re hitting the right notes, or play along using the provided jam track!
Blue And Evil
Finally, let’s dig into a performance of Blue and Evil featuring a duo-view which features both the rhythm and lead performances simultaneously. Remember to utilize tab sync to ensure you’re hitting the right notes, or play along using the provided jam track!
Concepts & Technique
Let’s talk a bit about the soloing techniques and concepts I used on the song Blue And Evil. I wanted this one to sound a little more worldly, so I use a lot of Phrygian-ish scales and techniques you might typically hear from a sitar. Check it out.
Playing with Your Peers
Yes, it’s fun to have the guitar turned up to 10! And in some cases, like playing in a power trio, that can be incredibly useful. But for larger ensembles it’s important to understand how to blend in with the rest of the band. In this lesson we’ll be talking about how to alter your sound to better suit the band as a whole.

Fantastic performance, mediocre teaching

JB is one of the best, and the songs, licks, tabs he performs here are just underline this! However, from a learner's viewpoint, I find his courses difficult to approach because he just demonstrating rather than teaching (I consider myself an advanced intermediate player). It would have been nice if he had better explained the logic of his choices (scale, mode, key) rather then just performing his runs. But anyway, I enjoyed very much and it's fantastic value (considering the courses cost a fraction of a a ticket to his live shows).

Great opportunity to learn from the best.

What a fantastic opportunity to learn from a master. Joe Bonamassa is one of the greats of blues and having him teach some of his best songs is great. He not only teaches the songs but he provides some great insights into playing.

Rejoice, it's finally here!

Y'all can figure out for yourselves what this course is about and all that. I would just like to encourage anyone who's feeling stuck on how things ramp up in here with a bit of insight. If you're at all familiar with JB's style you can already expect that there will be fast runs here and there - I mean really fast, even when you take the speed down quite a few notches. These fast runs usually don't go on for more than a few bars so if that's where you're stuck then keep working on the other bits and pieces and set aside some other time to work on alternate picking, groupings of fours, five, sixes and etc. If the runs are too fast chances are there are basic technique subjects that might be worth going back to. And there are a number of courses on that here on TrueFire. This isn't the kind of course that's gonna take you by the hand and build you from the ground up - that's not the intention. So have some good will, some faith and patience and granted these paths will open up to you.

KILLER!

It goes without saying that Joe Bonamassa is one of the great modern blues players (and one of my personal favorites), but I cannot express how incredible his instruction is on TrueFire-him breaking down some of the songs that I’ve been trying to figure out from online guitarists on YouTube has been SO refreshing! Cannot recommend his course enough!
