Electric Guitar Techniques For Creativity (JamPlay)

About this course

Cherrypicked from JamPlay, our sister TrueFire Studios’ company, Gretchen Menn’s top-ranked curriculum of video guitar lessons, Electric Techniques For Creativity has been upgraded with all of TrueFire’s advanced learning tools for the optimal “anytime, anywhere, any device” learning experience. Now available for download and streaming!

It's a catch-22, Virtuosic technique can be wasted without meaningful composition, but a lack of technique will limit your creative capability. In this course, Gretchen will teach you how to balance these two opposing forces in a harmony that will unleash your creative freedom and inspire new ideas.

It is not uncommon for guitar players to take an exaggerated stance on
technique. Some seem allergic to anything perceived as overly technical and so they shun learning extended techniques. Others make virtuosity the core aspect of their playing but overlook writing and forming a musical voice. Both extremes will limit your creativity.

Suited for guitarists at all skill levels, Gretchen will cover 29 electric guitar techniques that will fuel your creative expression when improvising or composing solos. From basic volume swells to tapping techniques to
artificial harmonics — you’ll discover that any single one of these 29
techniques will take your creative prowess to a whole new
level!

Rapidly gaining praise in the world of instrumental rock and beyond.
Gretchen's playing is a result of the music of Mozart, Beethoven, Steve Morse, Frank Zappa, and Jimmy Page. Michael Molenda, Guitar Player Magazine’s editor-in-chief, described Gretchen’s solo music best; “She seeks the unknown by blending disparate jazz, prog, and world-music influences into a tasty, guitaristic thrill ride.”

Not only a world-class guitarist, performer, and composer, Gretchen is also a passionate and accomplished educator, which will become readily apparent from the very first lesson in this insightful course.

JamPlay’s lessons feature multiple viewing angles and you’ll have all of TrueFire’s advanced learning tools at your fingertips to personalize your workspace and learn at your own pace.

You can loop, slow down, or speed up any lesson section. Plus, all of the tabs and notation are synced to the videos for the optimal learning experience. You’ll also get the tab and standard notation files to print out, Guitar Pro files, and all of the backing tracks to practice with.

Grab your guitar, and let’s get creative with Gretchen Menn!

Technique in Service of Creativity
It can be common for guitar players to take an exaggerated stance on technique. Some seem allergic to anything perceived as overly technical, shun learning extended techniques. Others make virtuosic displays the central aspect of their playing, but overlook important aspects of writing and forming their own musical voice. But both extremes are creatively limiting. Join Gretchen Menn as she introduces us to her JamPlay series - Technique in the Service of Creativity - showing that the two worlds need not be in opposition.
Alternate Picking - Enunciation and Directness
Alternate picking is simple in concept, though its levels of difficulty run deep. To begin this journey, we will focus on alternate picking technique with Gretchen showing us a series of exercises to get the best and clearest tone possible from a simple, one string sequence.

Alternate Picking - String Skipping
Armed with the foundation of the basic alternate picking technique, we now start to explore variations and extensions of it. Here we dive into alternate picking across strings and with string skips. You’ll notice it becomes increasingly difficult to be consistent as the leaps become larger, so we will take it slowly, focusing on accuracy.

an explosion in skill and speed

What a virtuoso and then an excellent teacher. I was already acquainted with her Zepparella hard rock past but this course beats everything. Here you are taken into her world of creativity and technical guitar styles. Something that will take a lot of time to master. The interest in her jazz influences and her classical background prompted me to start this course. Fortunately, this step by step is built up to an almost unattainable level. After struggling through the Alternate picking I arrived at the arpeggios 'Going for baroque' and I already know that this lady will improve me enormously during my guitar journey through her instrumental world. Pieces of melody from her solo albums are even taught in the lessons. Everyone can find their own identity here at his or her level and her teaching examples are a treat for the ear! The presentation angles and video images and the textbooks tab are very clearly indicated and easy to learn. With the tools of true fire you can loop back and learn at your own pace. Recommended!
