In The Jam: Blue Highways

About this jam

In this Blue Highways edition of In The Jam, Josh Smith plays both the rhythm and soloing guitar parts across 10 slow blues, funky blues, and blues-rock multi-track video jams in a variety of feels, tempos, and keys typically encountered at any blues jam session. On each track, Josh lays down a rhythm part from start to finish and then takes a couple of choruses worth of solos leaving choruses open for you to solo over as well.

"In this edition, I’ve put together 10 backing tracks that represent the range of feels that I’ll play at my own shows. We’ll jam together over a funky blues, 16th-note shuffle, blues with changes, slow blues, minor blues, and many others in a variety of keys and tempos.

Whatever your instrument - guitar, bass, drums, horns… no matter what you play, we’ll have a great time jamming together. You’ll be able to adjust the volume, mute or solo the tracks. You can mute my rhythm part OR my lead part, and play those.

You can also mute the bass or drums and play those parts. For each of my performance videos, I’ll give you a commentary: things that I was listening for, my approaches, things that I heard on the tracks, and how I responded to them."

The coolest thing about this is the ability to switch videos between Josh's rhythm and soloing performances as well as adjust the volume, mute or solo the parts. You can even remove Josh's rhythm or lead part, and you can play those. You can mute the bass or drums and play those parts. Singers, horn players, keyboard players -- you can all join in the jam, too!

Along with all the performance videos, Josh gives you commentary about the things he was listening for, his approaches, note choices, scale choices, things he's reacting to -- his overall concepts and guidelines.

Lead sheets are included for all of the tracks, and you’ll also get all the video, tab, and notation for both the rhythm and lead guitar parts.

Practice smart, play hard — get In The Jam with Josh Smith!

Excellent In The Jam and insight into a Modern Blues master

Excellent In The Jam course and insight into a Modern Blues master Personally for me Josh is one of the greatest modern improvisers around. He is a musical force combining brute force passion with incredible technical facility. He wearshis influences on his sleeve and it’s clear to hear when he blows over a track. A combination of Country, Jazz, Soul and R&B but always through a Bluelense. What you get here is 10 tracks that cover a nice range of styles fromstraight up Blues, minor blues shuffles, a killer motown groove and a tasty ‘LaGrange’ style ZZ Top Jam. It’s all Soundslice enabled so everything is very easyto follow. Personally for me this course shines in the rhythm guitar side ofthings ( I don’t usually like splitting guitar playing into lead and rhythm for me they are the same thing, but for the purposes of the review I’ll do so) Josh’s rhythm playing is second to none, with his influence from Cropper and Dupree on steroids. Even if you were to study 3 of the tracks rhythm playing you would become an overall well rounded better player but to have 10 flawless tracks is incredible. What you’ll notice is Josh switches things up after each chorus sosometimes within one track you might find 3 or 4 different approaches. So muhc to dig into here. This course is one I'll keep coming back to my entire guitar playing life, its full of gems a must have for me.

Incredible

I have a blast jamming two hours non-stop with Josh Smith today. In the jam: Blue highways is a treasure. It's a great complement to other Josh Smith's courses. I highly recommend it!

Awesome course !

If you want to become a better musician, you definitely should work on Josh's rhythm guitar parts in this course. The great thing is that you can hear them in detail (= totally isolated from other instruments). You have the PDF's where everything is notated. Trying to imitate Josh's groove and feeling will really put you in another dimension. It's not easy. The guy is really "in the pocket". Once you have nailed a part (or even a pattern), try to play it with the drummer only, the bass only, or even with the guitar solo part only. Challenging ! And fun !
