Solid Song Lesson!

The new TF offering „Songs“ is a very useful option to execute Frank Vignola‘s mantra and advice „Learn songs!“ Wolf Marshall as a seasoned player and instructor leads the student through the comping (from easy to slightly more complex) and melody. He offers also melodic variations and soloing ideas. Of course, Wolf Marshall‘s playing and his tone are impeccable and delightful. As an end result you can play the melody and you can accompany other players. Mission accomplished! Thanks, Wolf! Here is a suggestion for improving the learning experience for jazz songs: In contrast to learning iconic rock or pop songs, ideally note for note, these jazz standards are vehicles for improvisation and therefore it would be helpful to delve more into the harmonic structure of the individual song. It would be very useful for students, for instance, to provide a sheet with stripped down chords and Roman numbering (e. g. V = dominant etc.) to point out the basic harmonic relationships. The Roman numbers facilitate the transposition to different keys which is common if you play with sax players etc. I think that could be added easily. Final note: so far I picked up all jazz songs from this series with pleasure.
