Guitar Lab: Mastering Finger Rolls Pt. 1

About this course

Hi, I'm Brad Carlton and welcome to Guitar Lab: Mastering Finger Rolls Pt. 1. Finger rolls, while not as ergonomic as fingertip playing, do offer many benefits in terms of introducing angularity into single note work as well as more legato enhancement of chords with moving lines.

Topics covered in this course will be ascending and descending melodic and harmonic finger rolls, zigzag lines, flat finger technique, and single finger double stops. You will be given theoretical guidelines as to the application of major third intervals which occur between the third and second strings as well as the perfect fourth interval which occurs between all the remaining adjacent strings.

What you'll learn

  • Discover how finger rolls can expand chord voicing possibilities
  • Learn why finger rolls enable more legato playing on adjacent strings
  • Learn the difference between melodic (monophonic) and harmonic (polyphonic) finger rolls
  • Understand how articulation affects musical phrasing
  • Develop finger independence necessary for executing finger rolls

Topics covered in this course will be ascending and descending melodic and harmonic finger rolls, zigzag lines, flat finger technique, and single finger double stops. You will be given theoretical guidelines as to the application of major third intervals which occur between the third and second strings as well as the perfect fourth interval which occurs between all the remaining adjacent strings.
Fretting Hand Physiology
There are two sets of joints (except in the thumb): "proximal interphalangeal joints" (PIJ or PIP), those between the first (also called proximal) and second (intermediate) phalanges, and "distal interphalangeal joints" (DIJ or DIP), those between the second and third (distal) phalanges.
Finger Roll vs Hopping
This lesson will discuss the merits of a finger roll versus hopping from one string to another with fingertip technique.
Ascending Melodic Finger Rolls Pt. 1
When playing an ascending melodic finger roll, there are various technical and musical considerations. These center around articulation, clarity, and string damping.
Ascending Melodic Finger Rolls Pt. 2
The interval between the third and second strings is a major third. This lesson will talk about applications of finger rolls to this major third interval.
Ascending Melodic Finger Rolls Pt. 3
The interval between all the remaining adjacent string groups is a perfect fourth. This lesson will demonstrate various musical applications of this interval to different modes and scales.
Descending Melodic Finger Rolls
After you've developed the precision for playing an ascending melodic finger roll, you'll work in reverse for playing descending melodic finger rolls.

Rolling along

I never gave this much thought until I came across this lesson. This lesson has really helped in getting my little finger more involved, with each lesson I felt my little finger get stronger than ever before. This lesson added another way for me to improve on methods of my left-hand fretting that I really was not using before. Brad Carlton's lesson always brings me away with new found improvement.
