30 Beginner Funk Rhythms

About this course

Funk is not only a timeless genre of music, it's also an essential rhythm guitar skill that you’ll apply across virtually every genre of music. If you’re playing classic funk, soul or R&B music, you’ll be playing “funky” parts almost exclusively. But you can also bring the “funk” when playing rock, jazz, blues, pop -- you’ll even hear some very funky modern country tracks.

Carl Burnett’s collection of 30 Beginner Funk Rhythms will equip you with enough funky firepower to spice up any jam, song or composition, across virtually every style of music.

”Learning how to lock into the rhythm section with a tight syncopated guitar part that keeps the audience tapping their feet is more about feel than anything else.

The quickest and easiest way to develop that feel is simply practicing playing funky parts over funky tracks. That’s exactly what we’ll do together here in this collection of 30 funk rhythm guitar parts.

We’ll work with 6 funky jam tracks in different keys and tempos. I’ll show 5 different rhythm approaches for each one of those tracks.

Along the way, I’ll show you essential funk chord voicings, right-hand techniques, versatile single-note approaches, funk scratches, double-stops and other key “funky” approaches and techniques.

Most importantly -- you’ll be able to practice and playalong with me throughout the entire course!”

Carl will explain and demonstrate all of the key concepts and approaches along the way. You’ll get standard notation and tabs for all of the performance studies. Plus, you’ll be able to use TrueFire’s learning tools to sync the tab and notation to the video lesson.

You can also loop or slow down the videos so that you can work with the lessons at your own pace. All of the backing tracks are also included to work with on your own.

Grab your guitar and let’s get funky with Carl Burnett!

Funk Is Here: Chank on the 1
We’ll jump right in with a very special 3 note voicing that as you’ll see later in the course can be used in many ways. Notice how a simple rhythm can take on a whole new feel just by starting on a different beat. This funk classic has this rhythm starting on beat 2. See if you can figure out the voicing used. "Call Me" by Sky Line.

To further work on you single note scratch groove here is the “MUST KNOW” with Ray Parker on guitar, most know him from the Ghost Busters sound track but before that he was an in demand session guitarist for all things funky. This is a song he wrote for 70s funk band Rufus - "You Got The Love".

Soul Brother: 1 Bar Chank
Take special note here of the voicing used in example #2. The top 3 notes are the exact same shape is the voicing used in example #2 in the first lesson. However, the harmony has changed.

Here is a "MUST KNOW" James Brown track using the Dominant natural 9, "Hot Pants" (She Got To Use What She Got To Get What She Wants).

Also, learn the second bluesy guitar part. They are both very simple. It’s all about the feel and locking it in constantly every time, like you are on a loop.

Before I bought Carl Burnett’s 30 beginner funk rhythms, I bought his spotlight on funk which I thought was a little tough for my level of guitar, so I thought I should start at the beginning with his 30 beginner funk rhythms, which is absolutely fantastic making his spotlight on funk even easier if you like funk this is for you

Funky chops

Carl is just an amazing teacher. The rythms relatively easy to follow. The catch is in your ability to change accents, tempo, and to stay on the pocket. So, not only will you learn funky rythms, but you can see this course as a rythm skill up what ever the stayl you play.
