Nikki O'Neill About the Educator

Nikki ONeill is a guitarist, singer, and songwriter, deeply influenced by soul music and Americana. She was born in Los Angeles and is currently based there, but grew up in Stockholm, Sweden.

Nikki is featured in the November 2019 issue of Guitar Player Magazine, interviewed by blues guitarist Sue Foley.

An active recording/performing artist, Nikki played at Americanafest in Nashville and opened for Stax artists Southern Avenue in Los Angeles in 2019.

She released her solo album Love Will Lead You Home in 2017, followed by two singles in 2018. These have received airplay by blues radio stations around the world, and positive reviews by blues press in Europe.

As a guitarist, Nikki is all about playing for the song. Her style is inspired by soul pickers like Pops Staples, Curtis Mayfield, and Teenie Hodges (Al Green), but also Prince, Carlos Santana, Robben Ford, and Freddie King. Her songwriting is inspired by soul, gospel, rock, colorful harmony and great melodies (her favorites include Jerry Ragovoy, Dan Penn, Paul McCartney, and even ABBA's Bjorn and Benny... she grew up in Sweden after all.)

Nikki is the author of Womens Road to Rock Guitar (Alfred Music/iBooks), and the contributing writer for Songwriting Get Your Black Belt in Music & Lyrics (iBooks.) She's also written articles for Guitar Player, Reverb Lessons, She Shreds Magazine, and the Swedish musician's magazine Musiker Magasinet.

She genuinely loves to teach and to make music a part of peoples lives. Students have described her teaching as encouraging; skilled and intuitive; breaking things down in a way that really works, and easy to understand from playing to theory.

Nikki's guitar teaching experience includes private lessons (in person, via Skype); group guitar classes at New School University in New York City: international clinics; workshops with NAMM, and after-school programs. Some of her video lessons (like Led Zeppelin's The Rain Song) have reached 475,000+ YouTube views.

She graduated from New School University with a bachelor's degree majoring in music performance, and majored in guitar at two full-time music programs in Stockholm. In Los Angeles, she has studied with Adam Levy (Norah Jones); Dustin Barber (Al Green), and Vadim Zilbershtein (Earth, Wind & Fire.)
