Words are only Part of The Story
Another Peter Mulvey concert - on Earth Day 2022-04-22 Seven Steps Up in Spring Lake, MI - enjoyed, appreciated, astounded by. He regaled us in the 10,000 ways with songs - of course - stories (including a thread that ran thru each of the first set between song screeds), his grooving unfussy guitar playing and the energy of several nearby stars. Sounds like over-hype? Go see a show, you'll get lit up (as a human/player/songwriter). Peter's multiverse of styles and constantly shifting performance is anchored by seemingly simple songs, that ripple with subtly changing repetition. He drives that acoustic guitar - bouncy like Jeep on a rocky beach - in a confident manner with the occasional showoff flourish that sounds both slightly startling and yet off-hand. How does it get those bass strings to not "flab-out" and still sound so deep?!? Song are pulled from his 18 albums, plus new ones, plus fantastic writer friends (like Anaïs Mitchell) plus traditional and vintage blues/country/folk/rock ("Shenandoah" last night). All of them sound "Peter Mulvey". DO THIS COURSE, guitar-playing songwriter! Get smart, grounded, yet forward-thinking insights that will make your songs - and performances of them - more you, more dynamic, more fun. And go see Mr. Mulvey play where and when ever you can. We can all benefit from the illumination of nearby suns.
