Rock & Funk Guitar Heroes

About this course

Every musician has a long list of other musicians, past and present, that have inspired, influenced and helped shape their own sound and musicality. It's the natural evolution of music. We asked Chris Buono to pass on to you some of the key learnings that his Guitar Heroes passed on to him.

”Frankie Cicala, Eddie Van Halen, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, David "Fuze" Fiuczynski, and Wayne Krantz have all greatly influenced my own sound as I’m sure they’ve influenced many other players. In this course, I’ll show you a few of the techniques and approaches that I picked up from each one of them.

We’ll start out with Frankie Cicala, my first guitar teacher and the consummate working musician. Next up, EVH the undisputed heavyweight champion of rock guitar, all the while with a smile on his face. From his signature guitar to his whammy bar antics to his supreme unpredictability, Steve Vai.

Joe Satriani, the ultimate guitar teacher and the master of the melody. The jedi master of controlled chaos, David Fiuczynski. And in the final study, we’ll look at the deep pocket and signature harmonic approach of Wayne Krantz!”

In this course, Chris will first introduce his heroes to you and describe why he found them so influential. After each discussion, Chris will then present a performance study illustrating those influences in a musical context, over a backing track. A breakdown follows every performance and Chris will explain and demonstrate all of the key concepts and approaches in play.

You’ll get standard notation and tabs for all of the performance studies. Plus, you’ll be able to use TrueFire’s learning tools to sync the tab and notation to the video lesson. You can also loop or slow down the videos so that you can work with the lessons at your own pace. All of the backing tracks are included to work with on your own as well.

Grab your guitar and let’s dig in with Chris Buono!

My Guitar Heroes: Chris Buono
Hey! This is Chris Buono and welcome to this edition of My Guitar Heroes. This is a subject near and dear as it gives thanks to the guitarists who have inspired me to play this amazing instrument. Even better, it gives me a platform to inspire you through these six titans: Frankie Cicala, Eddie Van Halen, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, David "Fuze" Fiuczynski, and Wayne Krantz. These men have profoundly influenced how I play, compose, as well as how I conduct my business as a professional musician and educator. In this course I'll show you a few of the techniques and approaches that I picked up from each one of them.

Proceeding in chronological order, we'll start out with Frankie Cicala, my first guitar teacher and the consummate working musician. Frankie set it all up as he groomed me to make a living in music from the time I was a pre-teen!

It wasn't long before I fell under the spell of the inimitable Eddie Van Halen, the undisputed heavyweight champion of rock guitar. How could you not in the late 80s?! Speaking again to the times, through Eddie it was inevitable I would gladly fall prey to the world of Steve Vai. From his signature guitar to his whammy bar antics to his supreme unpredictability, I wanted to be that guy. Still do.

Crossing over to the second half of my heroes, we explore Joe Satriani, the ultimate guitar teacher and the master of the melody. That's precisely why it should come as no surprise there's no one guitar player from which I own more music.

My final two heroes are my New York guys: David "Fuze" Fiuczynski and Wayne Krantz. In the early 90s when I was just starting out on my own after college, it was these two guys who solidified so much of what my professional life would become. Fuze lit a fire that burns brightly today. His incendiary writing and playing mean everything to me. There's not enough words to describe the depth of Wayne Krantz both as a musician and independent artist. Wayne's deep pocket and signature harmonic approach is something I aspire to wield every time I pick up a guitar.

Throughout the lessons I will break down what I played in homage to the six heroes. Each of the segments dedicated to each of my heroes come with the jam tracks I use throughout the course so you can work with them on your own. You can loop or slow down the videos to work with the lessons at your own pace. Everything is notated in Guitar Pro and PDF. What's more, these jam tracks feature drum programming and bass playing by my good friend and monster bass player Steve Jenkins to work with on your own.

Ready?! Let's do it to it!
Frankie Cicala
Frankie Cicala was the first of my many life-changing teachers. Thanks to the encouragement of my older brothers, I started lessons with Frank around 1985. You couldn't ask for a better first impression with regards to learning a new instrument. I absolutely loved going to my lessons. In fact, I couldn't wait! I would nag my mother to drive me there early, and pick me up well after the lesson was done. Thankfully, Jack, the owner of Silverton Music where this all happened, liked this super-eager little kid enough to let me hang around.

I soaked up not only what Frank was teaching me, but also everything he played in and out of the lesson room. Frankie Cicala helped start it all, and for this reason, he's one my guitar heroes.

Eddie Van Halen
Eddie Van Halen is everyone's guitar hero. Everything about anything he did validates this. Even if you have only a topical understanding to the depth of what this man brought to the guitar, your life is better for it. Wherever Van Halen music is being played, a good time is being had. That music and the culture it created is centered around one man's artistry.

A world without Edward is still one I'm grappling with. He was the center of it all, and made it so with a smile on his face at every turn. What a ride! We should all be eternally grateful for the lifetime of inspiring moments Eddie gave us - I know I sure am. For that alone, and so much more, Eddie Van Halen is one of my guitar heroes.

An on ramp to some new techniques

This was the lesson I needed! I was looking for something to push me outside a box I am in. I wanted to challenge my hands and shake up my thinking. I respect and enjoy the music from these players highlighted in the course; but, I have never gone full on wanting to adopt their styles. What Chris has done here is provide some great samples of what they do; just enough to get them into your hands and thought process. Mission accomplished for me. I stressed out my hands, stretched my playing and expanded my mind by going through this course. I took something away from each lesson: a new perspective on some 2-3 note chords, a little whammy bar technique, some legato, controlled chaos, melodic phrasing and rhythmic phrasing. Great job Chris! Thanks.

Guitar Heroes

Great course. There are some difficult concepts and techniques but well worth the time and effort. I really enjoy the concept of the guitar heroes courses and hope you will keep them coming. Also, Chris is a great teacher. His guitar gymn has also really helped improve my picking technique.
