About this course

A high-octane mix of traditional styles played with an exciting twist and intense energy, Alternative Roots bands and artists like The Black Keys, Jack White, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Calexico and Gary Clark Jr. are all influenced by blues, country, surf and rock.

This hand-picked collection of 50 Alternative Roots Licks from Mischa Den Haring will equip you with the tool of the trade and a versatile Alternative Roots vocabulary.

As guitarist/vocalist for alternative roots band T-99, Mischa toured all over Europe and the US and their five albums have all received unprecedented critical acclaim. Mischa was nominated twice for best EU guitarist and Blues guitarist by Guitarist magazine. We’re very proud to welcome Mischa to the family with his first TrueFire course, 50 Alternative Roots Licks You Must Know.

”We'll look at some original licks, parts of existing material, and authentic classics that will give you some insight into different approaches to playing alternative roots music. I'll show you how to play cross rhythms as well as traditional country licks played with an edge and attitude. We'll also dig into tone, phrasing, dynamics, feel, and the use of effects like fuzz, reverb, tremolo, echo, and vibrato.”

Mischa demonstrates all of the licks over rhythm tracks and then breaks them down by stepping you through the key concepts, techniques and creative approaches that he used for each lick.

All of the licks are tabbed and notated for your practice, reference and study purposes. You’ll also get Guitar Pro files so that you can play, loop and/or slow down the tab and notation as you work through the lessons. Plus, Mischa generously includes all of the rhythm tracks for you to work with on your own.

Grab your guitar and let’s rock our roots with Mischa Den Haring!

50 Alternative Roots Licks

Hi, I'm Mischa Den Haring and welcome to 50 Alternative Roots Licks You Must Know. What we nowadays call alternative roots music is actually a mix of traditional styles in a new jacket and played with a twist. Bands like The Black Keys, Jack White, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Calexico, and Gary Clark Jr. are influenced by styles like blues, country, surf, and rock & roll. They play it with an intense energy and attitude that appeals to many and gets people rockin'!

We'll look at some original licks, parts of existing material, and authentic classics that will give you some insight into different approaches to playing alternative roots music. I'll show you how to play cross rhythms as well as traditional country licks played with an edge and attitude. We'll also dig into tone, phrasing, dynamics, feel, and the use of effects like fuzz, reverb, tremolo, echo, and vibrato. And of course, all these licks come with backing tracks and tabs for you to use at home. Let's dig in!

Sayonara

I hope you enjoy these alternative roots licks. Let's get rockin!

Rockabilly Triads

Now I'll show you how to add color and liveliness to your rockabilly and swing solo by making use of a few simple triad arpeggios.

Blues Vibrato

I once heard a famous guitar player say that you can tell something about someone's character by the way someone vibrates his strings. Here’s a lick that uses some vibrato and string bending.

Fast Country

Here's an example of a fast lick with a G run, famous in hillbilly and country music.

Fast Hillbilly Country

Here's another fast G run. At the end, I'll show you how to end a song like this by stacking up a series of G runs.

Black Keys Hook

Many modern blues and roots players like Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys and Jack White lean heavily on traditional roots styles and using fuzz, tremolo, and echo to mark their music.

Very diversified collection of licks

There is a very diversified collection of licks that are not really for the beginner. Some of these are quite a challenge. Then I just took them and made them my own and it made a world of a difference. By adding these licks my vocabulary has grown to where I can add more complex ideas to my playing. That's the next step after getting all these licks under your belt.
