About this course
2024 marks our 25th year of collaborating with world-class artists, dreaming up new learning experiences and interacting with students who have chosen to share their learning journey and joy of making music with us.
We have so much to be thankful for which is why we celebrate our 25th birthday by recognizing the artists, team members, and the many 'friends of the fire' that fortune steered our way. Whether you’ve been with us from the start or just jumped on the bus, your support means everything to us.
This XXV ON FIRE compilation will take you on a journey spanning 25 years. Each year features a TrueFire artist and a lesson that was released that year. We’ve organized XXV ON FIRE into 5 sections, each representing an ‘era’ of our development over the past 25 years.
1999-2003 | Red Wall & Muffulettas
These were our formative years during which we took interactive audio lessons to a whole new level while prepping for the imminent arrival of online video technologies. Enjoy these five favorites!
2004 was a breakthrough year and the start of milestone era featuring cool new digs with a studio (of sorts) and a world of unlimited educational possibilities with interactive videos!
Another breakthrough era with another new studio (that we built ourselves) and more pixels and resolution and video quality to play with. Over 400 new courses produced with 40 new artistes joining the family!
We bought a building, gutted it and designed every inch to our spec, including a studio designed for our unique approach. Launched In The Jam and the Channels platforms, plus released over 500 titles in this era!
More good fortune came our way in 2019 when we partnered with GCP who not only had monster business chops, they were passionate players and music learners as well. They led the charge to form the TrueFire Studios family by bringing on ArtistWorks, JamPlay and FaderPro.
The demonstrations and performances are tabbed, notated, and synced to the video with controls for looping, slow motion, fretboard animation, and many other tools designed to accelerate the learning process.
Once again, we can’t thank you enough for your support. Here’s to many more years of music, learning, and growth!

ERA | 1999 - 2003
The TrueFire brand was established in 1999, but our story began in the early '90s with a hobby project we called Notes on Call. Between '99 and 2003, we produced over 1,500 interactive audio lessons. This first era of evolution taught us the art and science of leveraging interactive technologies for music education, laying the foundation for everything that would come later.
Greg Koch | Audio Lesson
In this Greg Koch lesson, you'll learn the joys of chicken pickin' and how it adds tasty nuances to your guitar playing, no matter your style. Greg grew up on rock and blues and had no interest in country music until he heard Albert Lee on an Eric Clapton record. From there, he explored greats like Ray Flacke, James Burton, and Steve Morse. Chicken pickin' is especially great for blues players, adding a snappy, greasy quality to your sound. Greg introduces the technique by muting the A string and alternating plucks with your thumb and index finger, building momentum through exercises in the A blues scale. You’ll also explore hybrid picking for greater fluidity and style.
Carmen Grillo | Audio Lesson
In this Carmen Grillo lesson, you'll dive into the essence of Tower of Power's groove with sixteenth-note patterns. Example 1 presents a four-bar repeating pattern to lock in tight grooves, while Example 2 offers a pure funk rhythm using three fingerings, designed to enhance your rhythm chops and overall funk technique.
Muriel Anderson | Audio Lesson
In this lesson taught by Muriel Anderson, we explore the shimmering beauty of harmonic intervals. Starting with natural and artificial harmonics, we’ll dive into playing harmonics in fourths, thirds, and sixths. Begin by plucking octave harmonics in fourths on the top two strings at the 12th fret, and explore how to shift the interval using artificial harmonics. We’ll then move on to playing major and minor thirds, using slanted finger positions to generate harmonic intervals. Next, we’ll tackle major and minor sixths, applying slanted picking-hand techniques to bring out the harmonics. Finally, put these techniques into practice with the harmonic etude "Big Ben," focusing on sustaining the bell-like tones as you navigate changing time signatures.
Fareed Haque | Audio Lesson
In this lesson taught by Fareed Haque, we explore how jazz guitarists build licks around 7th-chord arpeggios, emphasizing the 9, 11, and 13, unlike rock guitarists who often stick to a single scale. Over a Gm7 chord, for example, a jazzer might use Gm9 or Gm13 arpeggios, adding half-step or whole-step embellishments to arpeggio tones. The key is to resolve to those tones, avoiding sour notes. Visualizing the arpeggio's parent chord helps, and you can combine arpeggios with blues scales to create your own unique licks. Always let your ear guide you.
Thom Bresh | Audio Lesson
In this lesson taught by Thom Bresh, we dive into Travis picking, a thumb-driven fingerstyle technique. Bresh emphasizes the importance of thumb independence, starting with a basic exercise on an open E chord. The thumb alternates between the root (E) and the 5th (B), while muting the lower strings to create separation from the higher notes plucked by the fingers. The next step is adding syncopated melodies with the fingers while maintaining the thumb-picked bass line. Bresh also highlights the use of the fretting-hand thumb for unorthodox chords, a signature move in Travis’s style.

Like a Guitar Buffet of Tasty Creations
This course covers a lot of ground both historically and in terms of the breadth of styles of guitar playing. But like any buffet, you’ll have to make some choices about which dishes (courses) you choose - I don’t think you can eat it all. The good news is that across these lessons, the featured artists are impeccable in their subject matter knowledge, teaching ability, insightfulness, creativity, skill, approachability, musicality, and presentation ability. Though I haven’t yet had the time to master the content (this could easily be my 2nd career), I have already benefitted in a couple ways: by gaining insight and exposure into the wide range of playing styles and artists covered in these lessons, by increasing my appreciation for how musicians think, and by increasing my appreciation for the evolution and growth of the Truefire site. As an All-Access member, I feel like I have been the true beneficiary of the tremendous work that has gone on behind the scenes at Truefire. I really liked being exposed to these artists whose names I have seen, but whose work I had not really investigated because maybe it didn’t exactly fit my current focus - and I didn’t want to get distracted. But now I have sampled their lessons, so I’ve got some ideas about how this content might fit into my personal guitar journey and how it might steer me on my path.

Fine collection, plenty to watch, learn and play
I guess we’ve all had an occasional freebie which, perversely, managed to be bad value. No such worry here - this is a really good collection, truly excellent in places, with a lot to work through and learn from. Perhaps inevitably it’s bitty, and some items may not be for everyone, but well done to TrueFire for offering us such a fine product - for free at that. It’s more than worth it (you know what I mean) just to see Tommy Emmanuel’s remarkable performance of Classical Gas in such fine detail - again, even if it/he isn’t your thing, seeing the virtuoso technique up close from several angles is fantastic. Thanks!
