Hummingbird by Ricky Skaggs is the lead-off track from Ricky’s 1989 album Kentucky Thunder. It’s fast, very exciting, and features some incredibly flashy guitar work by the great Albert Lee. We’re going to learn all the guitar parts. On this track, there are four guitars—two acoustic guitars and two electric guitar parts—plus an incredibly hot guitar solo. This is kind of a crash course in lead Telecaster style for country guitar. There’s a short mandolin feature at the end of the song, and in addition to that, we’ll learn an easy strum version of the song that players of any level can jump right into. I’m a big fan of Ricky Skaggs, and I’m a huge fan of Albert Lee. Most of us who play guitar really look up to Albert. This is an album we had in my family growing up, and I heard it a lot—I was always very excited by this track. So it was a real treat to break it down, learn all these parts, and teach them to you. So let’s go ahead, grab our guitars, and get started.
