Fingerstyle SongPack: Pop, Vol. 1

About this course

In this first volume of our new Fingerstyle SongPack series, you’ll learn how to play 5 fingerstyle arrangements of timeless popular hits. All 5 songs are arranged, performed and taught by the acclaimed performing and recording artist, Jake Reichbart.

Song Lessons Included:

1. Into the Mystic by Van Morrison
2. Maggie May by Rod Stewart
3. Sittin’ On The Dock of the Bay by Otis Redding
4. Sundown by Gordon Lightfoot
5. Time After Time by Cyndi Lauper

”This set of five hit songs get requested all of the time on gigs — they’re all fan favorites. They may be classics but you’ll still hear the originals and countless covers on the radio all of the time. They’ll make a great addition to your repertoire and you’ll get a lot of play out of them.

I also selected these particular five because they each have distinct rhythmic and melodic qualities that will benefit your overall fingerstyle technique as you learn to play the arrangements.”

Jake kicks off the SongPack with a primer of the fingerstyle techniques you’ll be using across all of the arrangements. Each individual song features three segments: Overview, full length Performance and a detailed section-by-section Breakdown.

You’ll have all of TrueFire’s learning tools at your finger tips to personalize your workspace and learn at your own pace.

You can loop, slow down, or speed up any section of a lesson. Plus, all of the tab and notation is synced to the videos for the optimal learning experience. You’ll also get tab and standard notation files to print out, Guitar Pro files, and all of the backing tracks to practice with.

Grab your guitar and let’s dig in with Jake Reichbart!

Fingerstyle SongPack | Vol. 1 - Pop
Hey there, everybody. This is Jake Reichbart and today, I'm going to share with you five finger-style guitar arrangements of some classic songs. The songs we're going to be exploring are:

'Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay' by Otis Redding,

'Into the Mystic' by Van Morrison,

'Maggie May' by Rod Stewart,

'Time After Time' by Cyndi Lauper,

and finally, 'Sundown' by Gordon Lightfoot.

These arrangements are here for a reason - they aim to introduce you to this style and, hopefully, whet your appetite to learn more. This is what it's all about - cultivating your own style. I'm really excited to share these arrangements with you.
Technique Overview
There are several techniques and concepts I consistently employ, regardless of the song I'm arranging for solo guitar. Primarily, you want to discern the melody – just the melody on its own – and you can do this by ear. There's no requirement to read it, or possess any prior understanding of harmony or theory. All you need is the ability to hear the melody when you play the record.
Sittin' On the Dock of the Bay
Sittin' On the Dock of the Bay' by Otis Redding is up first. Interestingly enough, it was co-written by Steve Cropper, a fantastic guitar player. This song was a massive hit and is still played to this day, everywhere from bars to restaurants. If you've played in a bar band, you've probably performed this song. Sadly, it was recorded just three days before Redding's untimely passing.

This song soared to number one and remains incredibly popular even now. In our arrangement today, we'll aim to emulate the original as closely as possible. We plan to replicate some of the iconic parts, starting with the bass introduction. Up next, we'll present a performance of the song, followed immediately by a deep dive into the song's components in greater detail.

Into the Mystic
Next, we have 'Into the Mystic' by Van Morrison. It's from the 1970 classic album, 'Moondance', and 'Into the Mystic' is undoubtedly one of his most adored songs. It's certainly one of my personal favorites too. As with all my arrangements, the first task is to capture the melody. We aim to play the melody as faithfully as possible, which is a significant challenge with Van Morrison's songs.

His voice has a distinct fluidity, which is his signature. Nevertheless, we're going to do our best to articulate that melody on the guitar. We've changed the key to C to make it a bit more comfortable to play. Creating this arrangement was truly a fun process. Up next, we'll listen to a performance of the song, and right after that, we'll delve into the details of the arrangement.
