”These six chord melody arrangements of pop songs include both classic soul songs as well as a few contemporary hits that you might hear on a Top 40 radio station. I chose these six songs because each has unique qualities for arranging them, and different skill sets for performing them.

I’ll start each song series of video lessons with an overview and full performance. I’ll then break it down, section by section. I’ve also included a practice playalong video with a click track and a much lower volume of my guitar so you can can use both as a guide.”

Chord Melody SongPack | Vol 1 - Pop
Hey everyone, this is Callum Bair. In this course, we're going to be looking at chord melody arrangements of some pop songs that span all the way from very classic soul songs that we're probably all familiar with, all the way to very, very modern songs that we would hear on a radio station. Now we're going to look at "I Say a Little Prayer" made famous by Dionne Warwick and Aretha Franklin, "Wake Me Up When September Ends" by Green Day, "Human Nature" by Michael Jackson, "Somebody That I Used to Know" by Gotye, "What's Love Got to Do with It?" by Tina Turner, and "Thank U, Next" by Ariana Grande.

Each one of these songs has its own set of skills and concepts associated with it. We're going to see how can we play that vocal line, how can we play that melody, and how can we play that rhythm all at the same time on our instrument.

So grab your guitar, get ready, and let's head on to the first lesson.
I Say A Little Prayer
"I Say a Little Prayer" is a popular song written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. Dionne Warwick and Aretha Franklin brought it to fame through their performances. In our fingerstyle medley arrangement, we'll cover the chords, rhythm, and melody, focusing on a verse and chorus. Fingerpicking plays a significant role, using the thumb, index, middle, and ring fingers. We'll explore hand positioning and the interplay between fingers to establish a comfortable default position. The left hand will utilize minor seventh, dominant seventh, and major seventh chord shapes. We'll also discuss the technique of "moving voices" within chords to incorporate chord extensions while playing the melody. Additionally, we'll introduce percussive elements, such as palm hits on beats two and four, to enhance the overall arrangement's rhythm.

Overall, our goal is to create a complete rendition of the song, capturing its harmonies and melodies. By combining fingerstyle techniques, chord voicings, and percussive elements, we aim to deliver a dynamic and engaging performance of "I Say a Little Prayer."

I Say A Little Prayer
Let's dive straight into this verse and provide a brief overview of the technique. With my right hand, my primary focus is on the melody, while simultaneously holding a chord. Particularly in songs like this, where the melody and chords may be more intricate, I won't be using a consistent finger-picking pattern with my right hand.

Essentially, my thought process involves strumming the chord and playing the melody. In my mind, I'm concentrating on seamlessly combining these two elements to create a harmonious sound.
I Say A Little Prayer
Now, let's delve into the chorus of "I Say a Little Prayer." We begin by playing the verse twice before transitioning to the chorus. In the chorus, I'll introduce the percussive aspect I mentioned in the song overview. It's difficult to incorporate percussion into the verse, particularly when you listen to the song.

The song doesn't have a traditional rhythm with a snare prominently ringing out and snapping on beats two and four throughout. There's even a bar of three that we're about to encounter. So, we allow the verse to resonate and stand on its own, creating a somewhat ethereal atmosphere.
I Say A Little Prayer
Now let's practice the tune with a guide track.
Wake Me Up When September Ends
Let's discuss this rendition of "Wake Me Up When September Ends." This famous song was written by Green Day in 2005 and is featured on their hit album, American Idiot. We'll be performing a mellower fingerstyle version that pays homage to the first half of the original track. If you listen to the actual recording, you'll notice that the first half is an acoustic ballad.

As the song progresses, it gradually builds up into a full-fledged rock anthem. Our version will emphasize the more subdued and intimate qualities of the song's initial portion.

Nice finger style on electric guitar using chord melody.

Just bought this lesson and I think it is just what I am looking for. Finger style on electric guitar using chord melody. Your picking finger nails look almost like mine. Not too long so you can mute the strings if you want, etc. Now, whether I will be able to learn one of these songs is still up in the air, but thanks for doing the lessons.
