Modern Jazz Palettes: Improv

About this course

When improvising in a modern jazz setting, guitarists need to call on a more sophisticated palette of improvisational concepts and creative soloing options than what is generally needed for traditional jazz performance.

Sean McGowan’s Improv edition of his Modern Jazz Palettes series will majorly accelerate your leap from traditional jazz soloing to modern jazz improvisation.

Sean shares five key and powerfully effective concepts that you’ll be able to apply immediately to transform what you already know into a modern jazz feel and sound.

”Fortunately, developing your modern jazz improv palette is much easier and quicker than you might imagine because all five of the key concepts that I’ll show you will build upon your traditional jazz improv foundation.

Your modern jazz improv palette will consist of 9th Arpeggio Sounds, Dominant Diminished Lines, Triad Pairs, Pattern-Based Approaches, and Rhythmic Based Ideas.

I’ve designed this curriculum in a contextual format. I’ll first demonstrate a particular concept and then we’ll apply it immediately by soloing over a jam track — you’ll play your way through the entire course!”

You’ll have all of TrueFire’s advanced learning tools at your fingertips to personalize your workspace and learn at your own pace.

You can loop, slow down, or speed up any section of a lesson. Plus, all of the tabs and notation are synced to the videos for the optimal learning experience. You’ll also get tab charts, standard notation, and Guitar Pro files, plus, all of the backing tracks to practice with.

Grab your guitar, and let’s dig in with Sean McGowan!

9th Arpeggio Sounds
One of the best sounds that you can tap into for your improv as well as your comping (and also as an exercise to just learn the fretboard better) is ninth chord arpeggios. In this series of lessons we're gonna go through about 20 different types of ninth chord arpeggios, But to start with, we're just gonna separate these by string location, meaning which string to start the root of the arpeggio on, and also sound type.

We'll cover two performances in this lesson series then move on to breakdowns for each of the performances. Let's dive in!

Very good and easy to follow course, a bit more comprehensive than Pentatonic Palettes where Sean did things more complicated than they are ;-) All in all great teacher, though.

Sean is great

I have 5 of Sean's lessons. I've been playing for 50 years and still find his courses to be excellent, thorough,, interesting, well presented and informative. Haven't done is fingerstyle (and probably wont) but I can highly recommend "Jazz, Blues and Boogaloo's, " Views of the Blues," and both "Modern Jazz Pallets. " They are the best of TrueFire for me.

Fantastic teacher and guitarplayer

Here a very pleasant teacher to listen to and who continues to fascinate. Very interesting teaching material, tasteful with a clear explanation. In the meantime I own more courses from this virtuoso. Haven't regretted a moment. Instructive course, take's time to master!

McGowan never disappoints!

This is a great course that combines several of Sean McGowan's course themes into a single useful and more advanced package. Sean McGowan is without a doubt one of TrueFire's top three instructors. He never disappoints!
