About this course

Massimo Varini’s collection of Intervallic Concepts for Soloing reveals 30 soloing approaches utilizing intervals, spread triads and phrasing — three of the most powerful melodic devices for crafting solos and improvisations.

”We are about to start a beautiful learning journey together, which I designed to vertically expand your musical language with just three simple devices; intervals, spread triads and phrasing.

The first step involves the performance. You will first listen to the ideas slowly to allow you to hear and understand the concepts in a musical context. We’ll play the ideas over backing tracks and then I will help you disassemble and reassemble the idea so that you can make it yours.

We’ll take each idea and apply it to three to four different musical contexts, on the same backing tracks. In the thirty lessons we will deeply explore the basic concept behind each idea; not only to play them on different chords, keys, modes and genres, but above all — to allow you to modify them until you make them your own.”

Massimo will explain and demonstrate all of the key concepts and approaches as you play your way through the 30 lessons. You’ll get standard notation and tabs for all of the key examples and performance studies. Plus, you’ll be able to use TrueFire’s learning tools to sync the tab and notation to the video lesson.

You can also loop or slow down the videos so that you can work with the lessons at your own pace. All of the backing tracks are also included to work with on your own.

Grab your guitar and let’s dig in with Massimo Varini!

What you'll learn

  • Create melodic lines using fifth interval jumps to outline diatonic scales
  • Transpose intervallic patterns across different keys and fretboard positions
  • Recognize the relationship between Lydian dominant and melodic minor scales

Welcome: 30 musical ideas (concepts) based on the use of intervals, spread triads and phrasing to vertically expand your musical language. Thirty ideas that I will play for you slowly and that you'll find transcribed in notation and tab. I'm going to show you each idea in 3-4 different musical contexts, on the same backing tracks you can download. In the thirty lessons we will deeply explore the basic concept behind each idea; not only to play them on different chords, keys, modes and genres, but above all to allow you to modify them until you get your own personal phrases! Getting Started: Primer
Ciao and welcome! You are about to start a beautiful journey in phrasing, to build your solos, a journey that we'll take together. You will notice that I wanted to give each idea (concept) a very specific melodic connotation so that we're not going to play just exercises but musical ideas, musical concepts. Each Idea is divided into two parts: The first involves the Performance: I make you listen to the idea slowly to allow you to understand and learn it with the help of transcription, then I'll play the idea on 3-4 backing tracks using various genre, speed, metric and mode Major or minor. In the second part I will help you "disassemble" and reassemble the idea so that you can make it yours. Obviously, if you want you can perform them as I propose them, to do this you just need to use the backing tracks that you'll download for each idea and follow the transcription. So the key to this course is to “steal” these ideas of mine and modify them looking for your style, phrasing and solos. Ready? Grab your guitar and let's get started! Have fun.
Intervallic Soloing Concept 1
This concept is based on wide intervals: 9 and 6. The examples are showing how to play this "intervallic pattern" diatonically on the scales, the jumps still the same and you can only change the last note to match the chord tone.

Intervallic Soloing Concept 2
This concept is based on sixt and fith intervals. Basically the pattern uses jump of sixt and, just in the end, a jump of fifth to match a chord's tone. The examples are showing how to play this "intervallic pattern" diatonically on the scales, the jumps still the same and you can only change the last note to match the chord's tone.

Intervallic Soloing Concept 3
Spread Triads: they are so tasty! This concept is based on spread triads in root position with a short melody added. The examples are showing how to play this "intervallic pattern" diatonically on the scales, the pattern of the triads still the same and you can only change the last note to match the chord's tone.

Great stuff

This is now my second course from Mr. Varini. Very interesting concepts and will add a whole new dimension to your playing. Over the years I have acquired quite a few instructional videos from TrueFire and this is one of my favorites.
