About this course

Finding your part in any size band, especially in large ensembles, is one of the most important skills that a guitarist needs command of — particularly when improvising in a jazz, funk or blues band setting.

In Bob Lanzetti’s Jazz Funk Combustion, Bob demonstrates a variety of techniques and 11 key concepts that he personally uses to spontaneously arrange guitar parts and improvise melodically on his solo records and with his band, Snarky Puppy.

NY based Bob Lanzetti has performed in over 40 countries with the three time Grammy® Award-Winning jazz/funk collective, Snarky Puppy. A brilliant guitarist, composer and producer, Bob is also a passionate and insightful educator, which is why we are thrilled to welcome Bob to the family with his first TrueFire course, Jazz Funk Combustion.

”We’ll dive deep into a variety of ways to craft complementary guitar parts. We’ll work on motivic development, rhythmic displacement, superimposition, and connecting triads. I’ll share some of my favorite voicings and comping approaches.

I’ll show you how to superimpose scales and triads for more colorful lines, layer rhythmic parts, and improvise off of a melody. We’ll also cover whammy bar techniques, hybrid picking and dialing in effects to create atmosphere and texture.

I’ll show you how to framework your learning journey, set goals and practice efficiently to accelerate your progress. I’ll teach you how to “listen deeper” to develop your ears.

We’ll put all 11 of these key concepts and technique to work across 15 soloing performance studies using backing tracks to give you a musical context.”

Bob will explain and demonstrate all of the key concepts and approaches along the way. You’ll get standard notation and tabs for all of the performance studies. Plus, you’ll be able to use TrueFire’s learning tools to sync the tab and notation to the video lesson.

You can also loop or slow down the videos so that you can work with the lessons at your own pace. All of the backing tracks are included to work with on your own as well.

Superimposing Minor Pentatonic
One thing I like to do when soloing is superimposing, which in short is when you take one sound and place it on top of another sound. This allows you take very common chords and scales that you know well and get new, unique sounds out of them. Let's look at a few examples of how we can use this technique.
Sunflower Super Standard
This performance is based on the song "Little Sunflower" by Freddie Hubbard. When soloing over this, we'll be superimposing a minor pentatonic scale over minor 7 chords, major 7 chords, dominant chords, and sus chords.

Superimposing & Connecting Triads
We're going to take our superimposing concepts a bit further, using just triads to connect and superimpose. Even though they're only made up of three notes, you can do a lot with triads. And, if you start connecting them to other triads you can get some unique sounds you wouldn't get otherwise.
Not Your Stock Triads
We're looking at the same changes for "Little Sunflower" here, this time superimposing and connecting different triads over different chord qualities for the solo.

Jazz Funk Combustion

The biggest suprise of this course is the concept of superimposing the minor pentatonic. Bob throws in a lot of other gems in a very accessible way. The fact that he is on of Snarky Puppy's lead guitar player gives an extra spark to this course. Great stuff!

Really cool

Great style and fairly unique to TrueFires typical blues/jazz lineup
