Practice Sessions: Melodic Morphing

About this course

At some point or another, all improvising guitar players find themselves in the proverbial rut; tired of hearing themselves playing the same go-to licks and scale runs in the same old go-to positions on the neck. Sound familiar?

Andy Wood’s Melodic Morphing edition of Practice Sessions is designed to bust you out of that rut and develop into a more tasty, original and multidimensional soloist.

”Guitar players need a multi-pronged melodic strategy consisting of ear twisting harmonic tweaks, attitude-loaded lines, and lots of slippery, melodic pyrotechnics.

In this hands-on course, we’ll focus on building your soloing techniques and improvisational skills by working on 8 melodic morphing techniques that I personally use all of the time.”

Andy will kick off each study with a breakdown of the melodic idea or technique and then he’ll perform an example over a backing track to give you a feel for how it sits in a groove.

”We’ll start out with a demonstration and practice session to get flat 9 triads under your fingers. Slippery, Slidey lines are a huge part of my sound, so we’ll dig into some of those in the second session. The third session focuses on a flat five triad flavor.

We’ll dig into some country twang with hybrid picking in the fourth set and then we’ll evoke a little Eric Johnson-style pentatonic pyrotechnics in the next. We’re gonna bend it some like Hendrix in the sixth.

We’ll add in soulful, melodic vibes take the focus in session seven and finally , we’ll work on some descending sassy licks to add some attitude to your playing!”

You’ll cap off each soloing study together with a hands-on practice session. Andy will roll the track and you’ll trade back and forth as he guides you through the core examples followed by several variations and embellishments.

Working regularly with these “practice sessions” is the key to having command of all 8 melodic morphing soloing and improvisational approaches.

You’ll get standard notation and tabs for all of the performance studies. Plus, you’ll be able to use TrueFire’s learning tools to sync the tab and notation to the video lesson. You can also loop or slow down the videos so that you can work with the lessons at your own pace. All of the backing tracks are included to work with on your own as well.

Grab your guitar and let’s dig in with Andy Wood!

Practice Sessions: Melodic Morphing
Hi, I'm Andy Wood. Welcome to this Melodic Morphing edition of Practice Sessions!

As an improvising guitar player, at some point or another, we all find ourselves in a melodic rut - playing the same licks and scale runs in our same go-to positions on the neck. To become a more tasty, multidimensional soloist we need a multi-pronged melodic strategy consisting of ear twisting harmonic tweaks, attitude-loaded lines, and lots of slippery, melodic pyrotechnics.

In this hands-on course, we'll focus on building your soloing techniques and improvisational skills by working on 8 melodic morphing techniques that I personally use all of the time.

What makes this format really special is how you'll get these approaches firmly under your fingers -- we'll practice each of these 8 approaches together in an interactive practice session.

I'll kick off each study with a breakdown of the melodic idea or technique and then I'll perform an example over a backing track to give you a feel for how it sits in a groove.

We'll cap off each study together with a hands-on practice session. I'll roll the track and we'll trade back and forth as I guide you through the core licks followed by several variations and embellishments. Working regularly with the "practice sessions" is really going to help you get these soloing approaches down.

All of the performances are transcribed and you'll be able to sync the tab and notation to the video using TrueFire's learning tools. You can also loop or slow down the videos so you can work with the lessons at your own pace. All of the backing tracks are included to work with on your own.

Flat 5 Triads
One of the things that I look for when looking to spice up a solo is adding in a few outisde notes, meaning notes that are not diatonic to the key. Here we'll be building triads on the root, flat 5 and octave (D, Ab and D) and sliding into them from below, finishing things off with a rock lick.

Here in the practice session, I'll take a turn playing through the lick, and then it's your turn! We'll work through the original lick, then check out a few variations together.
Slidey C Major Lick
This is a slippery lick with lots of altered tones. By that, I mean notes that are outside our C major scale. We're adding in the flat 7 as well as the flat 3rd on the front of the lick, and then taking a left turn and playing a half step up from the root (flat 2nd/flat 9). From there, we're going to outline some diminished ideas before taking back home.

supercharge your chops!

Andy Wood has chops and a strong melodic sense that he shares in this Practice Sessions offering. Country and rock are what is here, and in the "practice session" he offers insights and variations that are sure to please. If you are a fan of Andy's music, purchasing this course is a no brainer (unless you already have chops galore and can play his stuff just by hearing it). This practice session would be ideal for intermediate players and advanced beginners and provides some great lines. The course has eight sections and is mostly single note runs (along with some hybrid picking). Thank you Andy for sharing!
