About this course

TrueFire’s Live Plus series enhances the learning experience of select and previously recorded TrueFire Live broadcasts with high-quality video, video-sync tab and notation, looping, jam tracks, Guitar Pro files, and all of the other learning tools available in TrueFire’s desktop, mobile, and streaming apps.

In this edition, Matt Schofield goes deeper and wider on the techniques, creative concepts, and blues guitar performance approaches presented in his Blues Speak course. Using the backing tracks from the course (included here as well), Matt demonstrates fresh and original applications and variations of his Blues Speak principles — and they’re ALL tabbed and video-synced!

You’ll get standard notation and tabs for all of the performance studies. Plus, you’ll be able to use TrueFire’s learning tools to sync the tab and notation to the video lesson. You can also loop or slow down the videos so that you can work with the lessons at your own pace. All of the backing tracks are included to work with on your own as well.

Grab your guitar and let’s go Live with Matt Schofield!

Welcome Matt Schofield
Today, we've got something special for you! We've been waiting a while to get him in, he's an in-demand guy, touring all over the world - one of our favorite players, Matt Schofield.

If you haven't heard of him yet, it's time to get on it, as he's a three time winner of Guitarist of the Year in the British Blues Awards. He's in the British Blues Hall of Fame, with Guitar and Bass Magazine calling him one of the top ten British blues guitarists.

If you've heard him play, you'll know why that's true and why we're so stoked to have him in TrueFire Studios. He's here filming his first TrueFire course, so let's give him a warm welcome!
Playing in the Moment
Before we get into our interview with Matt, we'll talk a bit about Blues Speak and how the course will help you develop a common language of the blues. It's about developing a shared set of ideas and getting it inside of you so you can express yourself.
Bo Diddley Beat
Here Matt takes us through a Bo Diddley blues groove, showing us how building a guitar part is all based around the rhythm and a few notes.
Simple Isn't Easy
We'll talk a bit about how "simple" guitar parts don't necessarily mean that they're easy to play. Albert King didn't have a massive vocabulary, but what he did have was a great command on what he knew.

It's like making a masterful painting with only a few brush strokes. When playing a gig, it's about nailing a few "big" notes and not playing too much!
Slow Blues
For the first performance study, we've got a slow blues groove where Matt focuses on playing some simple ideas to build a solo and not a whole lot of notes. Let's check it out.
Working from the Foundation
Brad and Matt talk a bit about how creating a solo with just a few notes can be a liberating experience, and how having a solid foundation is essential to adding in more complex soloing techniques.
