30 ShapeShifter Licks You MUST Know

About this course

In his first edition of Shape Shifter, Andy Wood showed you how to take fundamental harmonic and rhythmic knowledge -- concepts you already know -- and then twist it to fit appropriately into virtually any style. In his Creative Applications edition of Shape Shifter, you delved deeper into 10 creative approaches that you can use in your own playing, improvisations, and compositions.

In this third edition of Shape Shifter, Andy’s passes on a vocabulary of 30 “Shape Shifter” licks, which includes many of his own favorite lines and phrases for building solos and improvising with.

”Along the way, I’ll pass on tips and approaches for using these licks when soloing in whatever style of music you happen to be playing. I’ll demonstrate and break down each of the licks using backing tracks that I pulled from some of my own records covering a variety of feels, keys, and tempos. I think you’ll get a lot of use out of these 30 licks!”

Andy will explain and demonstrate all of the key concepts and approaches along the way. You’ll get standard notation and tabs for all of the performance studies. Plus, you’ll be able to use TrueFire’s learning tools to sync the tab and notation to the video lesson. You can also loop or slow down the videos so that you can work with the lessons at your own pace. All of the backing tracks are included to work with on your own as well.

Grab your guitar and let’s do more shapeshifting with Andy Wood!

30 Shapeshifter Licks
Hi, I'm Andy Wood. Welcome to 30 Shape Shifter Licks You MUST Know!

In the first edition of Shape Shifter, I showed you how to take fundamental harmonic and rhythmic knowledge - the stuff we already know - and twist it to fit appropriately into virtually any style. In the Creative Applications edition of Shape Shifter, we delved deeper into 10 creative approaches for you to use in your own playing, improvisations, and compositions.

We'll expand your vocabulary with this collection of 30 Shape Shifter licks, which includes many of my own favorite lines and phrases for building solos and improvising with. Along the way, I'll pass on tips and approaches for using these licks when soloing in whatever style of music you happen to be playing.

I'll demonstrate and break down each of the licks using backing tracks I pulled from some of my own records covering a variety of feels, keys, and tempos. All of the licks are transcribed and you'll be able to sync the tab and notation to the video using TrueFire's learning tools. You'll get all of the jam tracks and can loop or slow down the videos so you can work with the lessons at your own pace.

Grab your guitar and let's go!
The "Doc" Tag
Here's Lick 1, a traditional bluegrass tag in the style of Doc Watson. This lick is all built in the key of G, with a major pentatonic sound and lots of open strings ringing out like Doc would have done.
Cross Pickin' Seven
For Lick 2, we've got a cross picking lick around the key of G7. It's kind of inspired by the way Jerry Reed would use fingerstyle banjo rolls. I start cross picking it, and then we end up with a little minor/major 3rd lick. Let's check it out.
Descending Flat Five
For this lick, we've got a descending lick with a flat five in it - kinda inspired by Brent Mason and the hot tele players out of the '90s. Let's check it out.
70's NewGrass
Lick 4 is coming atcha from the 70's era of "newgrass" acoustic guitar. Tony Rice, Pat Flynn and all those guys from that era were a big inspiration to me. Let's get to it.
Tony's Triads
This lick is a descending triad lick around G7. It's built around a simple principle, just a root - flat seven, root - flat seven, and then we just stack some triads. This one is again built around the heyday of "newgrass" in the 70s and 80s. The Bluegrass Album Band, Tony Rice Unit, J. D. Crowe, etc. All those groups had the same ten guys in their groups, so you heard the same riffs all the time.
Minor Ballad Slide
Lick 6 is a minor ballad slide. Obviously it could be used in any key, but we happen to be playing in the key of E minor. This is similar to some of the electric players I love, such as Dann Huff and Andy Timmons. Let's take a listen, then we'll break it down.

Good licks... poor notation

I'm only a few licks in and I've already caught blatantly mis-transcribed notation 3 times. Thankfully Andy is a clean player and you can learn by ear, but I'd recommend ditching the tabs/notation altogether and just learning by sight and ear with the videos.

shred!

I am a huge fan of Andy Wood and have really enjoyed this 30 lick course. The target is intermediate players and above who are interested in country, blues, and rock shredding. There is a wide variety of genres covered in these licks with some of them even played on the acoustic guitar. Andy's bluegrass and acoustic background is evident and much of that fire and attitude is transferred to electric guitar with a bit of grit. The backing tracks are useful for creating your own variations on the presented materials. As they say, grab your guitar and let's get playing!

virtuosity

Musicality trumps here! Every style that Andy Wood taps into rocks. He is a master of country, rock, jazz, blues, southern, folk, bluegrass and so much more. These are not easy licks, luckily Andy explains everything clearly. Clear video angles. This takes a lot of practice!
