Southern Roots

About this course

American roots music was born in the South and worked its way up the Mississippi River to Chicago, New York, and eventually even across the pond to England. The electric guitar was the vehicle that changed the face of 20th-century music forever.

Scott Sharrard’s Southern Roots examines the key creative approaches and requisite techniques that guitarists need to develop their own voice when playing any genre of American roots music.

Billboard Magazine hails him as, “One of the best guitarists in the country. Greg Allman agrees, “I know all about guitar players — I’ve seen the very best and Scott Sharrard is the perfect guitarist for my band. He understands that you don’t need to play just for the sake of playing; He never steps on the vocals, leaves plenty of room for everyone else to do their thing, but when it’s time to solo… Scott delivers, boy!”

We’re thrilled to welcome Scott to the family with his first TrueFire course, Southern Roots! You will likewise be thrilled as you play your way through this eye and ear-opening curriculum that Scott presents in this highly engaging course.

”I've been privileged to record, perform and collaborate with so many legendary blues, rock, soul, jazz, and country artists throughout my career. Their influence helped shape my own voice on the guitar. In this course, we're going to explore what I consider to be the essentials for playing any genre of American roots music.”

Scott organized the course into four sections. In the first, he covers a few of his core blues influences and demonstrates how he incorporates them into his rhythm playing and solos. The second section focuses on creative approaches for improvisation.

In the third section, you’ll work on slide guitar and then finally, you'll dig into some critical technical approaches in the fourth section like bends, vibrato, chord comping, right-hand approaches, shape-based improvisation, and blues scale analysis.

Throughout the course, Scott presents demonstrations for all of the key concepts and techniques, and then you’ll play through 12 performance studies to illustrate those approaches in context.

Scott will explain and demonstrate all of the key concepts and approaches along the way. You’ll get standard notation and tabs for all of the key demonstrations and performance studies. Plus, you’ll be able to use TrueFire’s learning tool to sync the tab and notation to the video lesson. You can also loop or slow down the videos so that you can work with the lessons at your own pace. All the backing tracks are included to work with on your own as well.

Grab your guitar and let’s play some Southern Roots with Scott Sharrard!

Southern Roots
Hi, I'm Scott Sharrard. Welcome to Southern Roots!

I've been privileged to record, perform and collaborate with so many legendary blues, rock, soul, jazz, and country artists throughout my career. Their influence helped shape my own voice on the guitar.

American roots music was born in the South and worked its way up the Mississippi River to Chicago, New York, and eventually even across the pond to England. The electric guitar was the vehicle that changed the face of 20th-century music forever.

In this course, we're going to explore the fundamentals in all genres of American roots music to help you develop your own voice on the instrument. I've organized this course into four sections. In the first, we'll cover a few of my core blues influences and the way I incorporate them into my rhythm playing and solos. The second section focuses on creative approaches for improvisation. We'll cover triads and horn-based lines, and a few of my favorite jazz influences.

In the third section, we'll cover slide guitar. We'll look at shapes on the neck, open and standard tunings, acoustic slide approaches, and the vocal qualities of playing melodies with a slide. Finally, we'll dig into some technical approaches in the fourth section. We'll explore bends & vibrato, chord comping, right-hand approaches, shape-based improvisation, and blues scale analysis.

Throughout the course, we'll work through 13 performance studies that illustrate the key approaches at each step of the way. All of the performances are tabbed and notated and you'll be able to sync the tab and notation to the video using TrueFire's learning tools. I also include the practice backing tracks and you'll be able to loop or slow down the videos so that you work with the lessons at your own pace.

Grab your guitar and let's get started!
SECTION 1: Blues Influences
Can't lose with the blues - the very spine of every form of American roots musician that was ever born. The 3 Kings (Albert, BB and Freddie), Johnny "Guitar" Watson, Albert Collins, Magic Sam and well beyond.

"So many roads, so many trains to ride..." - Otis Rush
The Art of the Tripod
Jerry Jemmott taught me this term "the tripod": bass, drums and guitar. Classical music has the string quartet and American music has the tripod plus keys! If you can't play rhythm and honor the song and the singer, don't come to the party. Music is a team game, play your part!
Blues Rhythm Essentials
Here's more rhythm roles; essential building blocks of any repertoire on electric guitar. Being a team member in a rhythm section and playing and complimenting the song is the name of the game.
Reedy Rhythm
Jimmy Reed and his band - the architect of it all. The best thing I ever learned on guitar (and luckily the first thing). Blues is what it's all about; the roux in the gumbo.
Reedy Rhythm
Here's a little analysis of how Jimmy, his wife (his co-writer and guitarist) and the men in his band, like guitarists Jimmy Rogers and Eddie Kirkland, built the Reed assembly line of groove.
Blues Improvisation & Feel
Here we'll look at the actual blues scale (combining African penatonics and rhythm and Western harmony), the importance of phrasing over licks or scales, and how to play with space and focus on really saying something. The blues scale is the key root in all American improvisation across rock, country, soul, funk, folk, jazz and beyond.

Wow! So much Content. And Such Good Fun!!!

Scott Sharrard is a champion of the Heart! He has really connected so many disparate influences in such a cogent way. Scott shows us the elemental parts (which we all need to revisit again and again), and then blows our minds with virtuoso technique. BUT this is not a technical course, it's about finding your pathway to musical expression. As a semi-pro player (yes, I made $65 last Saturday night), I'll be revisiting this course again and again. It's rich and deep. Bravo Scott. 5 Stars.

Got a new thinline hollowbody and I needed some help getting my roots down. This is a great course for getting the sound and the style of different roots rhythms and phrases. Great teacher with a relaxed style of instruction.

This is a great course for those interested in and respectful of American roots music, especially the blues. Scott Sharrard is a great guitarist and an excellent teacher with insight into the origins of today's popular music. His Jimmy Reed lessons are worth the price of the course alone! I recently purchased his subsequent courses on Southern Roots Licks and Creative Applications, and they seem very worthwhile as well.
