30 Bluegrass Licks You MUST Know

About this course

Improvising is a key element in bluegrass flatpicking guitar and often we work with a song’s melody to build our improvisational ideas around. At the same time it’s important to command a large vocabulary of licks, over a variety of styles and keys, so we can take our soloing beyond the melody and construct solos when playing over a tune that doesn’t have a specific

This collection of 30 Bluegrass licks from flatpicking master, Roberto Dalla Vecchia includes many licks inspired by the legends of Bluegrass guitar as well as many of his own favorite go-to licks, which Roberto developed over the years as a respected performer and recording artist.

”I divided these 30 licks into two sections: In the first section (licks 1-13), we'll play licks, which work nicely over one chord only. These licks typically end on the third beat of the measure, giving you enough time (and note choices) to connect it to the following chord. In the second section (licks 14-30), we'll learn licks starting on one chord and ending on another. These licks are connected to the two most common keys in flatpicking guitar: C and G.”

Roberto will demonstrate the lick over a backing track and then break it down for you emphasizing key techniques and harmonic approaches.

Roberto will explain and demonstrate all of the key concepts and approaches along the way.  You’ll get standard notation and tabs for all of the performance studies. Plus, Roberto includes all of the rhythm tracks for you to work with on your own. In addition, you’ll be able to loop or slow down any of the videos so that you can work with the lessons at your own pace.

Grab your guitar and let’s pick some bluegrass with Roberto Dalla Vecchia!

30 Bluegrass Licks
Hi, I'm Roberto Dalla Vecchia, and welcome to 30 Bluegrass Licks You MUST Know! This collection of 30 licks includes many of my own favorite licks, licks from the greats, and licks I've developed over the years after "stealing" ideas from the greats. Improvising is a key element in bluegrass flatpicking guitar, and these licks will help you out at your next jam session. Even though we all like to improvise around the melody, it is important to build a large vocabulary of licks, over a variety of styles, because sometimes there is no melody at all to be played or because it's just fun to move away from the melody for a bar or two.

I divided these 30 licks into two sections: In the first section (licks 1-13), we'll play licks working over one chord only. These licks typically end on the third beat of the measure, giving you enough time (and note choices) to connect it to the following chord. In the second section (licks 14-30), we'll learn licks starting on a chord and ending on another. These licks are connected to the two most common keys in flatpicking guitar: C and G. For this reason, they might be a little harder to incorporate in your solos.

I'll perform each lick over a backing track and then I'll break it down note-by-note pointing out everything you need to know. You'll have standard notation and tab to work with as well, plus you'll get all of the jam tracks to work with on your own. So, let's start in and have some fun!
Classic G
Let's start with a classic G lick. It works great at various speeds, and you can also use it as the first half of an ending phrase.
Bluesy Tony
This a Tony Rice-style lick that you can use whenever you want to add some blues to your solo.
Tony's Favorite
Another bluesy G lick, this one is based on a very common fingering of the G pentatonic blues scale. Tony Rice uses this fingering quite a lot.
Sliding C
This is the first of 4 C-chord licks. This one is very useful to shift from the first to the third position. In this example, the lick goes back to the first position, but you can easily twist it and stay at the third position.
Doc's Game
When I think of C licks, Doc Watson comes to mind immediately. Listen to his outstanding arrangement of "Black Mountain Rag". This lick is all about the contrast between the minor and the major third.
C Descending Run
I learnt this lick from Dan Crary - you can listen to it in his arrangement of "Dill Pickle Rag".

Already Want Volume 2!

Now THIS is a great licks course for acoustic guitar! Wow! No nonsense, great licks and how to master them quickly. Roberto's presentation is crisp, the videos all run about 3 minutes in length (and the up/down right hand picking is very visible), there are multiple examples at different speeds, the attached notation/tabs are clear and highlight points where picking direction is critical, and Roberto's understated approach just makes it fun to follow along. And the licks are ALL as wonderfully lyrical as they are versatile. Also, while most of these licks are made to be played at speed, they are surprisingly accessible for an intermediate player. Hey TF folks, how about a course from Roberto or your other bluegrass/acoustic giants like Cathy Fink or Stephen Mougin, that take licks like these and provide guidance on incorporating them into songs? If there's already a TF course on this for acoustic/bluegrass, I have not found it.
