About this course

The down home country blues grooves pioneered by legendary pre-war blues artists will live on forever, both in their original form and as the foundation for more contemporary blues grooves. Richard van Bergen’s Down Home Boogie & Blues Guidebook will take you on a learning journey through a versatile collection of swamp pop, boogie-woogie, rhythm & blues, and early Chicago blues grooves.

”There's nothing more exciting and sexy as a stripped down boogie groove as played by John Lee Hooker, RL Burnside or Fred McDowell. Just a man and his guitar could set fire to a Mississippi juke-joint and make people holler, stomp their feet and dance till the break of dawn.

Blues can be haunting, emotional and strictly personal - just listen to recordings by Skip James or Blind Willie Johnson. But these bluesmen had a broad repertoire to choose from. And when it came to playing the Saturday night fish fry or any kind of party down south, it was dance music. It was boogie time!”

You’ll learn to play in the style of the blues artists who pioneered the evolution of pre-war country blues in swampy Louisiana to the electric blues explosion that followed in the smoky blues clubs of Chicago, Houston, and Detroit.

As you work through the course, Richard will demonstrate and break down 16 versatile "down home" grooves and variations that work in a solo setting or with a band, on either acoustic or electric guitar. In addition, Richard also gives 7 more grooves with backing tracks so that you can work specifically on a band setting.

Richard will explain and demonstrate all of the key concepts and approaches along the way.  You’ll get standard notation and tabs for all of the performance examples. Plus, Richard includes all of the rhythm tracks for you to work with on your own. In addition, you’ll be able to loop or slow down any of the videos so that you can work with the lessons at your own pace.

Grab your guitar and let’s go down home with Richard van Bergen!

Down Home Boogie & Blues Guidebook
Hi, I'm Richard van Bergen. Welcome to the Down Home Boogie & Blues Guidebook. There's nothing more exciting and sexy as a stripped down boogie groove as played by John Lee Hooker, RL Burnside or Fred McDowell. It was boogie time.

In this course, there will be no fancy string licks or tricks. We'll focus on those merciless boogie and blues grooves that will make you stomp your feet and boogie till you drop. I'll hand you 19 different "down home" grooves and variations that will work even if you play them by yourself on an acoustic or electric guitar. And on top, I'll show you an additional 7 grooves with a band backing you up. These timeless grooves can easily be adapted to more modern styles of music like rock and funk. Just listen to The Black Keys or Gary Clark Jr. And of course, we'll give you the tabs and jam tracks for all of these grooves. Let's boogie, chillins!
Boogie in A
In this section, we will play grooves in the key of A, regular tuning. This key is very suitable for this kind of music, because you can use open strings a lot. Many blues recordings are in this key. We'll start off with a basic boogie groove and take it further from there. We'll be adding syncopated chords, brushes, walking bass lines and fills.
Bass in 8ths
Here we're playing the bass in 8th notes.
Add Brush
Now, let's add in an upward brush to the boogie in A.
Syncopated Chords
Here we're adding syncopated chords.
Add Fills
This is where it gets a bit more difficult: playing fills in between.
Quarter Triplets
Quarter triplets á la John Lee Hooker will break up the groove and give you rhythmic tension.

Rockin' with Ritchie

I really liked his first video, so I was very happy to find a second. I love to play dead thumb, JLH and Lightnin' Hopkins style, and Richard has that in spades. I'm up to Groove 15 and I like to take my time play through.

School of the blues!

I keep coming back to this course because it's the foundation of blues and boogie groove. Richard Van Bergen does a great job transferring the repertoire that he learns from the greats. I love Richard's progressive method. Hopefully, he will come back with another blues root/boogie course.

Great course - even greater teacher!

I love this course! So instantly usable and fullfilling! Richard van Bergen shares a ton of great licks and techniques, all with a laconic and dry humored teaching style. The man is particular about groove (and rightly so!) and shows you how to do it properly. I really think he is one of the great teachers on this platform, would love to have more courses from Richard, and, others asked for this as well, a tutorial about how he gets his sound.

Merciless Boogie And Blues Grooves!

If you want to be able to play stripped back, 'down home' boogie grooves in the style of the original blues giants like John Lee Hooker, RL Burnside or Fred McDowell, then this course by the excellent Richard Van Bergen is exactly what you need. The many presented grooves will sound awesome on electric or acoustic guitar, and can work as solo accompaniment or with a band. They can also be easily adapted to more modern styles of music like rock and funk. Richard does a great job of demonstrating the different grooves and provides breakdowns for each of them. Great stuff!
