Trading Solos: Texas Blues

About this course

Jamming with other players -- there's absolutely no better way to improve as a musician and guitarist!  When you comp for another soloist, you not only work on building your rhythm chops — you’re also picking up new licks and ideas from their solos. When they comp for you, it’s your opportunity to try out your own ideas and approaches, inspired by the groove that the rhythm section is laying down.

In this Texas Blues edition of Trading Solos with Corey Congilio, you’ll jam together over five Texas blues grooves in a variety of keys and feels.  Corey will kick the course off by sharing some gear tips, techniques, and other key approaches to help you get that big Texas Blues sound.

”I'm a big fan of Texas Blues because of the emotional soloing, soulful grooves and monstrous guitar sounds that the pioneers of this style created. In this edition of Trading Solos, we'll jam over 5 Texas blues grooves. That's right - "we'll jam!" I'll share some tips about tone, comping approaches, and show you some of the licks that I’ll build my solo around. I'll break them down, and then we'll jump into trading solos. I think you're going to love the relaxed vibe of this course, and I really hope that you'll jam and trade solos with me on a regular basis. You'll really get a sense of my personal approach to this style as well. I'm going to show you my "go-to" ideas and how you can incorporate those into your playing.”

For each of the five featured Texas Blues grooves, Corey will show you a handful of licks and comping approaches that you can use over the track. You’ll then take turns applying those ideas, by soloing and comping for each other.

Grab your guitar and let’s trade solos with Corey Congilio!

About the Trading Solos Series

TrueFire’s Trading Solos series provides players with the next best thing to jamming live with other players. Each edition focuses on a particular style and features a top artist/educator who specializes in that particular style. For each track, the educator will show you a comping approach and a few licks that they will build their soloing around. You’ll then comp for each other and ‘trade solos’ over the track.

Trading Solos: Texas Blues
Hey fellow Texas blues lovers! Welcome to Trading Solos: Texas Blues. I'm a big fan of this type of music because of the emotional soloing, soulful grooves and monstrous guitar sounds the pioneers of this style have created.

Alright, let's jump in and trade some Texas blues solos!
Texas Blues Style Tips
I get asked often about the gear I use to achieve a "Texas blues" sound. Generally, folks are looking to get a sound that's similar to Stevie Ray Vaughan's tone. Unfortunately, no one figured out how to bottle up his amazing tone! That being said, there are some great companies offering fantastic tools to get us close to that massive guitar sound!

I generally start with a single coil guitar. Stratocaster type instruments are obviously the standard, however, I'm using a tele and I generally get great results with this type of neck pickup. A Fender style amp (preferably blackface style) is the next step. I've also had luck with Marshall plexi style amps as well. These amps have a great natural breakup that handle pedals well.

When it comes to pedals, there are hundreds of options out there these days: SRV used Ibanez tube screamers and occasionally a fuzz. Do some research on light overdrive pedals or drop me an email and I can give you some of my favorite options. Ok, have fun on your tone quest!
Track 1: Shuffle in A
We have to start with a classic Texas shuffle feel. We're in the key of A here, and I'll start by showing you some licks and ideas I'd play over a groove like this.
Track 1: Shuffle in A
I start with a classic shuffle comping approach here. I'll briefly talk about how to make the rhythm sound "tight". Also, really try to lock in with the drums and bass here. The upbeat rhythm I'll show you is something I do often - it offers nice a counter rhythm and is a lot of fun!
Let's Trade Solos
Okay, let's trade some solos. I'll throw in some of those ideas I demonstrated for you. Don't forget to play rhythm for me when I solo. Alright, let's have some fun!
Track 2: Straight Funk in E
There's plenty of funky grooves in Texas blues music. This track is in the key of E...the mother of all funky keys! You'll see why I love playing over these types of grooves here. I'll throw in lots of SRV-isms, too!
Track 2: Straight Funk in E
This groove is really based around the E7#9 chord. This chord is commonly called the "Hendrix" chord, and I'll show you two ways to play it. The magic is in the right hand for this groove, so pay attention to how I'm strumming. I play some fun single line grooves here, too. You may not think that you could do this for a rhythm part, but it really works well. Give it a shot!

Trading Solos

I realized that this is a great way for me to strengthen my jamming skills as opposed to just doing solo leads over tracks. I want to get back on stage and jam again and these "Trading Solos" I believe will help get me a bit more polished. I also like how I'm playing in keys that I normally don't and that is exactly how it works in a real jam situation. Just the opinion of an intermediate guitarist who lost his ability to play for almost 2 years due to health reasons but now I'm coming back and playing a little more and more.

Great fun. One of the best ways to improve your soloing chops

Trading solos helps me with improving my solo chops and it's lots of fun to do. My only suggestion would be to have the tracks last longer. I keep wanting more time to explore my creativity.

Great Texas Blues

I have a number of Corey’s courses, I think there great, straight to the point, well laid out. This material is great to try and play along with. I’d characterize myself as an early intermediate player. I really don’t practice enough but enjoy listening to all these talented musicians.
