About this course

Welcome to Guitar Lab: Solving the Puzzle Vol. 1.

I've used the title "Solving the Puzzle" as an analogy to the theoretical analysis, a musician goes through when presented with a bass line that may or may not include some chord structures.

This course will equip you with the tools to apply theory which will allow you to label and organize the music you learn for future reference.

You'll also understand your options for extending chords, developing fills, and soloing over progressions.

Music can be organized into patterns, this course will help you in recognizing these patterns.

What you'll learn

  • Apply harmonic pattern recognition to memorize songs faster
  • Expand creative options for improvisation and composition
  • Find bass lines by ear using singing and systematic note searching
  • Discover how bass and drums lock up rhythmically
  • Understand how to analyze music from the ground up (drums first, then bass, then harmony)

Guitar Lab: Solving the Puzzle Vol. 1
Hi, I'm Brad Carlton and welcome to Guitar Lab: Solving the Puzzle Vol. 1. I've used the title "Solving the Puzzle" as an analogy to the theoretical analysis a musician goes through when presented with a bass line that may or may not include some chord structures. This course will equip you with the tools to apply theory which will allow tou to label and organize the music you learn for future reference. You'll also understand your options for extending chords, developing fills, and soloing over progressions. Music can be organized into patterns — this course will help you in recognizing these patterns.
Listening in a Crowd
We all have the ability to focus on a single conversation within a room full of people who are speaking. It's important as a musician development same skill when listening to music. This lesson will demonstrate this principle in action.
Rhythmic Analysis
This lesson will focus on the various components of a drum groove. The concepts of straight or shuttle rhythms, and rhythmic grids (which may be played or implied) will be explained.
The Bass Line Pt. 1
Just as there are 12 inches marked off on a foot long ruler, in music there are 12 half-steps within the octave. This lesson will focus on locating the root of the prevailing chord on the sixth string between open and 12th fret.
The Bass Line Pt. 2
The math principle of subsets which reside within a set is in an effective way to organize groups of notes within a scale or mode. This lesson will show how this principle applies to a bassline.
The Bass Line Pt. 3
It's important to understand the formulas for the various modes so that you may readily see your options for rhythm and/or soloing over a bassline. This lesson will help you organize these formulas.
The Bass Line Pt. 4
Once you understand what the implied chord is at any given point in a piece of music, you'll then be able to both extend the chord with notes from the appropriate scale or mode. This will also help you solo effectively (melodically) because you'll know which notes are the strong notes (the chord tones).

Putting it all together

You could call this course "Putting it all together" because that's what Brad helps you do in these videos. Using your ear and music knowledge, he takes you through the process of starting with part of a piece of music and adding to that something that sounds nice and musical. Like Brad's other courses, it's based on simple formulas and processes that really make a lot of sense. The skills you get in this course will help you figure out music from ear, jam to recordings or other musicians, and compose in ways that make sense. It's an easy course to get through but will all a lot of value to your playing. Other musicians you play with will also appreciate your knowledge of these skills since they're designed to help you lock in with the music as a whole.

Nicely done

Great lessons for playing along with jam tracks, bands, or other drum solos. Brad Carlton always makes playing a more interesting journey in playing better with plenty of charts and chords to advance you in playing skills. Not really a course for very beginner players will need a little knowledge of scales and theory, but with that in mind, this course will take to the next level in soloing. After completing this course and understanding completely will definitely be going to part 2 of the course.
