About this course

Dig playing the blues? You’re in for a very sweet treat with this collection of 30 Cutting Edge Blues Licks You MUST Know from Jay-P, one of the most recorded studio musicians in all of Europe. Jay-P (Jan-Peter Beijersbergen) gets the call because he’s not only highly skilled, he has a broad range of styles and techniques at his command.

”I'm taking a modern approach to playing the blues, much like Robben Ford, Eric Johnson, Greg Koch, Carl Verheyen, Vince Gill and Joe Bonamassa would do. This leads to using different scales, modes and concepts. I like to challenge the listener a bit by mixing in a bit of country, funk, rock, and jazz influences in my lines and solos.”

We’re excited to welcome Jay-P to the family with his first TrueFire course, 30 Cutting Edge Blues Licks You MUST Know! We’ve called this collection of Jay-P's licks 'cutting edge' because all of them use one or more special elements or unconventional techniques such as alternative voicings of chords, modal influences, unusual use of fingers, large interval jumps, open strings, and creative use of chromatic runs.

For each of the 30 lick lessons, Jay-P will first demonstrate over a jam track and then provide a detailed breakdown of the lick emphasizing the techniques and approaches in play.

BIG BONUS! Jay-P includes two full-length solos using the lick vocabulary from the course (worth the price of admission alone!).

You’ll get standard notation and tabs for all of the licks for your practice, reference and study purposes. Plus, Jay-P includes all of the rhythm tracks for you to work with on your own. In addition, you’ll be able to loop or slow down any of the videos so that you can work with the lessons at your own pace.

Grab your guitar and lets cut to the edge with Jay-P!

30 Cutting Edge Blues Licks
Hi, I'm Jay-P, Welcome to 30 Cutting Edge Blues Licks You MUST Know. When I play blues, I don't stick to just running up and down the blues box. I like to mix different styles into my playing. My solos are full of country style licks, a bit of jazz, rock, and funk. I like to challenge the listener a bit. I'm using a modern approach to playing blues, much like Robben Ford, Eric Johnson, Greg Koch, Carl Verheyen, Vince Gill, and Joe Bonamassa would do. This leads to using different scales, modes and concepts.

I've called these licks cutting edge for several reasons. All of them use one or more special elements, like an unconventional technique, an alternative voicing of a chord, an unusual use of fingers, large interval jumps, open strings, and creative use of chromatic runs. This selection of licks can be the bases for finding a new way to approach your blues soloing. Create your own original licks! As a bonus, I've added a few complete solos using these 30 cutting edge licks. All these licks come with tabs and backing tracks. Well, enough talk. Let's get busy!
Chromatic Funk
This lick is a nice chromatic lick over a funky blues on B7. It's a Robben Ford kind of lick, a little bit jazzy and bluesy, but it can also be used in country style. If you listen to great country players like Brad Mason, Greg Koch, or Johnny Hiland for example, then you can hear these kind of licks. I like them because it surprises the listener and it gives the lick more edge.
Be Blues 1
This is part of a complete solo run over a blues progression in the key of B. I cut the solo in three parts or licks. This is part 1.
Be Blues 2
The second part of the solo is a nice lick over the second chord of this blues in B, in this case E9.
Be Blues 3
The third part of this solo consists of a lick in a V-IV chord progression and the turnaround in a blues in B.
Be Blues Full
This clip has licks 2, 3, and 4 in a complete solo.
Country Lee
This country lick is nice to play over a blues progression in E. I've heard Albert Lee play licks like this one. There's a nice position switch in the lick, while using chromatics. It ends with pull-offs and string bending.

Cutting-Edge Blues Licks

Without a doubt Jay-P is a master of the guitar. The style, knowledge and experience he has is perfectly reflected in his guitar playing. The use of different scales and concepts creates a unique style that gives a freshness to the Blues but at the same time maintains the essence that defines the genre. The content shown is very entertaining because you can learn new techniques and skills with which you will have a larger repertoire, the concepts are understandable and the level increases in difficulty. Highly recommended.

Some very interesting ideas here especially for people that know a lot of blues licks already. I highly recommend this great course. It is explained in a very professional way and very easy to understand especially if you know some theory.
