30 Beginner Bass Grooves
Hi, I'm Andy Irvine and welcome to 30 Beginner Bass Grooves You Must Know. You've chosen the coolest instrument to learn, and I'm the guy to help you on your way to a long and fun journey with the bass guitar.

In this course, I'll demonstrate and teach you a variety of great bass lines and grooves. Together we'll begin the process of building your playing technique and understanding the bass, and I guarantee that you'll soon have the ability to start jamming with others. This is the core stuff that creates the foundation for a diverse skill set and creates the possibility for you to play, and even earn, with your bass guitar in many musical settings.

We'll cover everything from rock to soul, to blues and funk, gospel, pop, and even some great acid rock, jam band, drum & bass, heavy metal, and punk rock bass lines. I encourage you to learn all of them, embrace all of them, and find appreciation in all of them. These are some of the crucial building blocks for a well-rounded musicality and a personal style with many tasteful layers.

For each lick, I'll give you a demonstration over a jam track, and I'll break it down note-by-note including detailed instruction on the key concepts and techniques. You'll get standard notation plus all the jam tracks to work with on your own. Alright friends - grab your bass and let's get started!
Open 8th Notes
Many of the bass lines in popular music are steady and powerful pulsing 8th note grooves. Here I'll get you started with the key elements of that function and how to set it in motion in your playing.
Tight 8th Notes
The mood and feel of this groove can be varied by playing the 8th note pulses with shorter and tighter notes. This often gives the music a cleaner sound and creates a little space, also working well to support a vocal section or create tension in the music.
Broken Feel #1
These broken feel grooves are all about space - leaving holes, or rests, in your line. This is an element that is crucial to the development of your musicality.

We all have a natural body clock that allows us to keep time in music, and by practicing these grooves you'll start to develop your clock. Count through the holes when you're not playing, focusing on even smooth tempo and playing your notes with punch, purpose, and deliberate authority.
Broken Feel #2

Broken Feel #3
These broken feel grooves are all about space - leaving holes, or rests, in your line. This is an element that is crucial to the development of your musicality.

Rock Shuffle
The rock shuffle will be found in hundreds of songs along your musical path. Playing straight down the middle with steady pumping 8th notes always grooves the hardest and sounds the cleanest. Be cautious not to attack the bass too hard with your plucking hand, you want a tone that is warm, round, and full. Think of bouncing your fingers off the strings - not mashing them through the strings.
