Solo Factory: Jam Craft

About this course

Whether you’re composing a solo or improvising one, you’re connecting a series of musical ideas to express yourself. Developing a vocabulary of licks is the first step. The next step is learning how to craft variations of the licks using note displacement or altering the rhythmic feel.

The final step -- connecting your vocabulary of licks to craft full-length solos, over any style of music -- is the primary focus of Corey Congilio's Jam Craft edition of Solo Factory.

"In the first section of the course, I’ll show you 30 all-purpose licks - 10 blues licks, 10 rock licks, and 10 country licks -- any of these 30 licks can be varied, and even combined, to fit over any style. All of the licks stem from either the minor or major pentatonic scales -- plus, I’ll show you how to mix minor and major to get that great sound used by all the top players. In the second section, you’ll connect your new vocabulary of licks, vary them with the approaches you learned in the first section, and then we’ll craft full-length solos over a Shuffle In G, a Straight Eighth Feel In A, an Uptempo Rock In D, a Rock Ballad In E, and a Hard Rock groove In A."

Corey will explain and demonstrate all of the key concepts and approaches along the way. You’ll get standard notation and tabs for all of the performance studies. Plus, you’ll be able to use TrueFire’s learning tools to sync the tab and notation to the video lesson. You can also loop or slow down the videos so that you can work with the lessons at your own pace. All of the backing tracks are included to work with on your own as well.

Solo Factory: Jam Craft
Hi, I'm Corey Congilio. Welcome to my Jam Craft edition of Solo Factory!

Whether you're composing a solo or improvising one, you're connecting a series of musical ideas to express yourself.

Developing a vocabulary of licks is the first step. The next step is learning how to craft variations of the licks using note displacement or altering the rhythmic feel.

The final step - connecting your vocabulary of licks to craft full-length solos, over any style of music - is the primary focus of this Jam Craft edition of Solo Factory.

In the first section of the course, I'll show you 30 all-purpose licks - 10 blues licks, 10 rock licks, and 10 country licks - any of these 30 licks can be varied, and even combined, to fit over any style.

All of the licks stem from either the minor or major pentatonic scales - plus, I'll show you how to mix minor and major to get that great sound used by all the top players.

In the second section, you'll connect your new vocabulary of licks, vary them with the approaches you learned in the first section, and then we'll craft full-length solos over a shuffle in G, a straight eighth feel in A, an uptempo rock in D, a rock ballad in E, and a hard rock groove in A.

Everything is tabbed and notated. Plus, you'll be able to use TrueFire's learning tool to sync the tab to the video. You can loop or slow down any segment of the video so that you can work with the lessons at your own pace.

Grab your guitar and let's get started!
SECTION 1: Lick Vocabulary
We're going to start the course with 30 licks spanning genres from blues, rock, country, Southern rock and rockabilly. We'll cover a variety of different keys and techniques. Get ready because this is gonna be fun!
Shook Ya
The first rock player that came to mind when constructing this course was Angus Young. Angus is a master at combining major and minor pentatonics. This lick is a tribute to the classic tune "Shook Me All Night Long", and we'll even revist the feel in a full length solo.
Cost Off
One of my favorite rock bands of all time is Bad Company. Most people think of Paul Roger's incredible voice leading the band, but their guitarist Paul Kossoff was great at combining scales and writing memorable solos. This lick tips the cap to this great player.
Keefy
You guessed it. Keefy pays homage to another one of my favorite players, Keith Richards. Keith is a blues aficionado and took the blues vocabulary and made it his own. He often combined our two scales and this lick represents that.
Heartbroken
By now you're seeing that I've indulged myself by highlighting some of my favorite guitar players. One of my all time favorites is Mike Campbell of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers fame. Mike wrote some of the most memorable rock solos of all time and this lick pays tribute to his often simple yet effective approach.
Open Door
When I think of a blues rock song, "Roadhouse Blues" by The Doors comes to mind. Robbie Krieger plays some textbook maj/min pentatonic stuff in that tune, and doing it in the key of E gets us some nice options. I'll demonstrate that here.

Well, Corey breaks down everything he plays note by note ,so learning what he plays is a breeze. It also makes it easy to steal from the best and make it your own. Over the years Corey has made me a better soloist because he takes his time explaining what he plays. Jam craft is a treasure trove of beautiful licks. I always look forward to buying whatever Corey produces. He’s really an excellent player and teacher.

Real fun one

The licks in this are really nice and tasty and while they sound impressive are quite easy to learn for an intermediate player like me. Love the concepts here.

Excellent as usual !

Corey suggests that we work on the minor and major pentatonic mixture in different keys. As usual, this course is excellent.

One of my favourite courses

I don't know how this hasn't got more reviews. If you are starting to mix minor and major pentatonics this is awesome. Tasty licks and related to well known songs. The thing I like the most is that in the end you get 3 or 4 complete solos combining all of the previous liks. I love this and I can not recomend it enogh.

Great teacher

Excellent bunch of licks and good advice about how to develop them into effective solos. Corey explains things well and shows how to tweak ideas to get maximum use out of them
