About this course

The major and minor pentatonic shapes and sounds are the first scales most blues and rock players learn to start soloing and improvising with. Pentatonics got us up and running quickly, but we all hit that roadblock where pentatonic scales aren’t producing the sounds we hunger for.

Your instructor will tell you to learn more theory, learn more scales, and get a solid grip on modes — there are no shortcuts. No argument, that’s very good advice. However, a quick and very easy way to take your soloing to a whole new level is a click away — Jeffery Marshall’s Pentatonic Hijacks.

”In this course, we will ‘hijack’ the Major and Minor pentatonic scale to easily and quickly expand your creative options when soloing and improvising. This approach is ideal for players who want to get up and running quickly without learning a ton of music theory, scales, or modes.

We will base everything around the basic pentatonic shape, which you probably already know. We will add notes to the pentatonic scales to create more sophisticated sounds.

As we traverse through the course, we’ll get more advanced, but we'll always refer back to the basic pentatonic shape and scale. Once you get a grip on this approach, you can jump into many more advanced concepts to get way outside the basic pentatonic sound.

I've also created eight exclusive backing tracks for this course to help you improve and practice these strategies in a musical context.”

You’ll have TrueFire’s interactive learning tools at your fingertips to personalize your workspace and learn at your own pace.

The performances are tabbed, notated, and synced to the video with controls for looping, slow motion, fretboard animation, and many other helpful tools. Backing tracks, Guitar Pro files, printable tab and notation are also included.

Grab your guitar, and let’s dig in with Jeffery Marshall!

Pentatonic Hijacks
Hey, everybody. This is Jeff Marshall here. Welcome to my course where we're going to hijack the major and minor pentatonic scale and expand your playing.

This is a great approach for the everyday guitar player. You're not going to have to learn a bunch of music theory and learn a bunch of scales and modes. We're just going to start with a basic pentatonic shape, we're going to add to it, and as we traverse, we're going to get more and more advanced. But we'll always be able to refer everything back to that original basic sound.

And once you get a grip on this, you'll be able to actually even jump into some more advanced conceptual things where we can get way outside. I've also created eight exclusive backing tracks for this course that will help you improve and practice some of these strategies on your instrument. I really enjoyed putting this class together.

I hope you enjoy it, and I'll see you in the first lesson.
Minor From the Root. Establish the Sound!
In this first lesson, Jeff begins with some basics taking the A minor triad and mixing it with the A minor pentatonic to play some inversions to help establish our sound!
Minor From the 5th
Now that we have some basics under our fingers, let's focus on some sounds that get us outside of the pentatonic and start stretching out our sound!
Minor From the 4th
In this lesson we look at adding another color to our sound, this time we focus on the minor triad from the 4th degree!
Putting it Together - Aeolian Mode
Let's combine some of these triad shapes into the Aeolian Mode to create something that sounds a little more three-dimensional!
Minor from the 2nd - Dorian Mode
Taking the concepts from the previous lesson, we add those triads to the Dorian Mode!
Major Triad From the b2 - Phrygian Mode
Now that we have the A minor and D minor sound established under our fingers, let's take a look at what makes up our B flat major sound!

Another game changer.

Wow. I'm amazed how much this changed how I see the fretboard and how I approach improvised soloing. I didn't come away understanding modes any better - but I didn't have to. Such awesome and usable tools.

Adding Value To Pentatonic Scales!

Jeffery Marshall has put together an excellent course on how the major and minor pentatonic scales can be used in a variety of different ways to really open up the fingerboard and allow us to express some really interesting musical ideas. A real eye opener if you've only been using pentatonic scales in a very rudimentary fashion. Great stuff!

Pentatonc Hijacks

I found this dvd to be immensly helpful in breaking out of the cage system pentatonic patterns and for training my ear to hear the intervals and how they sit over the chords. Mr. Marshall does a fine job of teaching that eases the player into a small amout of theory without intimidating the novice. *Reviewer JAC can find the chord prgressions on the PDF's that accompany the play along lesson segments.
