About this course

As a bass player, you need to know a lot of grooves, across a wide variety of styles and feels. But great bass players also need to know how to create their own grooves from scratch. Ariane Cap’s Bass Groove Creation Station presents a variety of simple, creative and very impactful approaches for creating grooves in virtually any style.

”After laying the groundwork for making a bassline groove, and then clarifying the fundamental tonal material, we’ll examine how to deepen the pocket and explore a variety of styles. I’ll show you several ways to spice up your own grooves and then we’ll apply all of these principles and creative approaches using jam tracks.

First, we make it groove by looking at various subdivisions such as straight 16th note grooves and shuffled sixteenth-note grooves. We’ll examine the effect of downbeat oriented vs syncopated grooves. Using my groove formula and rhythmic template, we’ll also look at ways to analyze various styles such as reggae, soul, and Motown.

I’ll show several ways to spice up your grooves using tenths, triads, pentatonics, and chromaticism. We talk about how to play well with the kick drum. And then we’ll bring it all home by showing you some special techniques such as hammer-ons and pull-offs.”

All of the key examples and performances are transcribed and you’ll be able to sync the tab and notation to the video using TrueFire’s learning tools. All of the backing tracks are included, and you can also loop or slow down the videos so you can work with the lessons at your own pace.

Grab your bass and let’s create grooves with Ariane Cap!

Bass Groove Creation Station
Hi, I'm Ariane Cap. Welcome to Bass Groove Creation Station!

As a bass player, you need to know a lot of grooves across a variety of styles and feels. But great bass players also need to know how to create their own grooves from scratch.

I have a simple formula for creating grooves that I'm excited to share with you here in this course. After laying the groundwork for making a bassline groove, and then clarifying the fundamental tonal material, we'll examine how to deepen the pocket and explore a variety of styles.

I'll show you several ways to spice up your own grooves and then we'll apply all of these principles and creative approaches using jam tracks.

All of the key examples and performances are transcribed and you'll be able to sync the tab and notation to the video using TrueFire's learning tools. All of the backing tracks are included, and you can also loop or slow down the videos so you can work with the lessons at your own pace.

Ari’s Groove Formula
Let's take a look at the basics of a groove. A groove has two main functions: a harmonic function and a rhythmic function. The harmonic function is to form the foundation or lowest notes of the harmony and to outline it. The rhythmic function provides a link to the drums or percussion.

My groove formula:
(Harmony + Rhythm + Repetition) x Pocket = Groove
Grab Your Bass & Let's Try It
In this segment, I'm showing you the groove formula in action. I will start with a rhythm (step 1). I play it as dead notes, so you can feel and hear it in isolation. As we bring in the harmony - a 1564 chord progression - I play just the roots using the rhythmic template (that's step 2). Then I expand from there (step 3) adding chord tones and some color with chromatic notes. I also demonstrate the use of scalar runs. With these ingredients - the rhythmic template, the chord tones combined with some chromaticism or scalar runs - you can already build many grooves. Watch me improvise using these concepts!
Chord Recap
Need a refresher on the most important chords that may come your way? In this segment I give you an overview, complete with good fingerings. My favorite theory practice is to use the theory material in a groove, so that is how I show you to practice these chords: by grooving them!
Let’s Try Another Groove
In this segment I put these chords into action - in a groove, of course. This 1 - 6 - 2 - 5 sequence is a very common chord progression. I show you a spacious version and one that is a bit busy. As always, first I show the rhythm, then we play the roots, then we expand using chord tones.
The Pocket
A course about the groove has to talk about the pocket. A good pocket has many elements. In this segment, I'll talk about a few of them.
Timing Exercise
A deep pocket has many components, but good timing is a vital part in the mix. Good timing can be practiced. Here we practice several combinations of beats - join the down beat, off beat and everything in between. This helps you feel the subdivision.
