About this course

Some people say a great song is a marriage between the lyrics and the melody, but the groove plays a huge role in many of our favorite records as well. Hitmakers like Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, Chuck Berry, Chet Atkins, Paul Simon, Mark Knopfler and many other great songwriters are not only masterful lyricists. They also have a propensity for building catchy guitar grooves - hooks that propel the vocal and draw the listeners ear into the arrangement.

Gareth Pearson designed the Acoustic Groove Collective, featuring 15 acoustic grooves, to evoke the guitar stylings of some of popular music’s most gifted and prolific songwriters. By playing your way through these performance studies, and working through the breakdowns, you’ll be building a vocabulary of compositional approaches to build more compelling acoustic guitar grooves for your own songs and compositions.

”We’ll look at a handful of minimalist, “vocal-forward” approaches used by singer songwriters such as Paul Simon and Jerry Jeff Walker, bouncy grooves like those featured by writers like Bobby Gentry and Bill Withers, and open string lines and open tunings as utilized by Joni Mitchell and John Martyn.

We’ll also tackle rock-oriented groove players like Lindsay Buckingham and Mark Knopfler, a country rooted guitar grooves of songwriters like Dolly Parton and Chet Atkins, and modern, pop-production approaches used by players like John Mayer and Ed Sheeran.”

Gareth will first present a performance study and then break it down emphasizing the key concepts, approaches and techniques in play.

Grab your guitar and let’s get in the groove with Gareth Pearson!

Acoustic Groove Collective
Hi I'm Gareth Pearson. Welcome to Acoustic Groove Collective!

That's what the Acoustic Groove Collective is all about.

I've designed this collection of 15 acoustic grooves to evoke the guitar stylings of some of popular music's most gifted and prolific songwriters - but the real aim here is all about you. By playing your way through these studies, you'll be building a vocabulary of compositional approaches to build more compelling acoustic guitar grooves for your own songs and compositions.

All of the performances are transcribed and you'll be able to sync the tab and notation to the video using TrueFire's learning tools. You can also loop or slow down the videos so you can work with the lessons at your own pace.

Simply Simon
Here's an example of a Paul Simon picking pattern. You'll notice that the right hand picking pattern repeats over the chord cycle, providing a laid back, easy listening grove thats sits comfortably behind the lyricists story to tell.

The exercise is in the key of Cmaj, covering over the chords C, E7, Am, D7, F, and G. The thumb is has an alternative bass not picking pattern while I'm plucking the melody with my index and middle fingers.

She Ran the Show
This is a very ballad style way of playing those romantic 6/8 feel songs. My right hand is pumping the bass line softly with my thumb, while gently comping the chords on top with my index and middle fingers. I'd like to think of this a "swing and sway" type feel.

We're approaching this in the key of G, but by having the capo on the 1st fret, we're technically now in the key of Ab. For the guitar minded, we're playing over the chords shapes G, D, Am and C. Pay close attention to the extra harmony that I'm adding to the D and Am chords.

acoustic groove collective

This is a really well put together course ,with a teacher that has a knack for getting his point across with a minimum of fuss. Some of stuff is for instant gratification and some is to be worked on and absorbed over a period of time. I reckon the balance is just right , well done Truefire.
