GIT graduate Tobias Hurwitz resides Baltimore Maryland where he has been avidly playing rock guitar since 1977. Tobias is the go to guy for Baltimore guitar lessons as well as bass lessons. Webcam guitar lessons are a popular choice for students outside of Baltimore. Over the years Hurwitz has taught countless players everything from classic rock and metal to blues, jazz, fingerstyle, slide, funk, Spanish Guitar, reggae and whatever interests the student. Ambitious students also learn music theory, sight reading, ear training, technique and improv.
Quite a few regional guitar heroes have studied with Tobias including Glenn Riley of The Reagan Years, Chris Scholtes of Several Species, Dan Book of Voodoo Blue, Zach Zeger of Musicorps and shred god in waiting: Chris Ranier. His long time student, Jazz prodigy Dan Price, is now attending Berklee on a scholarship. Tobias was named Baltimore’s Best Guitar Teacher by The City Paper and Best Guitarist in the Mid-Atlantic by The Music Monthly. He is a music professor at Hagerstown Community College where he offers private guitar and bass lessons and runs The Electronic Ensemble.
During the summers Hurwitz directs the Rock Star Jam rock music camp at The Park School and teaches at The Crown of the Continent Guitar Festival in Montana and the Ruby Mountain Guitar Summit in West Virginia. You can hear Tobias play his heart out on his three solo releases, including Zen Shred Zone which features cameos from Michael Angelo Batio and Mattias Ai Eklundh, and more recently Dreamer, in collaboration with singer-songwriter extraordinaire, Terry Gourley. Terry & Tobias perform regular gigs as a regional duo playing original music and classic covers.
Tobias has written 15 guitar books for Alfred Publications on topics ranging from rock guitar to note-for-note transcription to Zen guitar to getting the best tones from your gear. He is widely published by the major guitar magazines such as Guitar Player Magazine and was prominently featured in the Penguin best seller: Guitar Zero by Gary Marcus. Hurwitz has over a million you tube hits and has worked with a long list of world renowned artists including Dennis Chambers, Stanley Clarke, Victor Wooten, J. Geils, The Coasters, Philip Toshio Sudo, Bumblefoot, Paul Reed Smith, Sonia, Matt Halpern and many more.
Tobias holds the patent and trademark on his invention: The Shred-o-Meter, which is the world’s first musical note speedometer, measuring the NPS (notes per second) that a guitarist plays.
